3200 Lateral Acceleration sensor - What is it used for?

I'm installing KW non electrically adjustable suspension, replacing the standard Bilstein electronically adjustable set up. Question is: Do I still need the lateral acceleration sensor located behind the passenger side headlamp?

Or perhaps there are other systems on the car that use this sensor other than the suspension? Grateful for any knowledge.

I have the front bumper off, so would prefer to remove any unused electrical components while I'm in there. Working on principle of the less electronics the better in these cars!

Cheers

I think there will be others out there that can provide advice on any other functionality but I believe there are two sensors that are used on active suspension - the vertical accelerometer behind the light and the lateral accelerometer on top of the radiator.

Pretty sure the short answer is yes you still need it as the ABS and Hill hold system and functions take a signal from the sensors lateral and vertical on most systems as far as i am aware.

Thanks for the responses. I'm pretty sure the 3200 does not have a 'hill hold system'? Will check into the ABS though - good idea.

OK, I've read the workshop manual (probably should have done that in the first place) and it describes the ABS\ASR system using these inputs;

  • 4x wheel speed sensors
  • Vehicle speed
  • Steering angle sensor

After reading the manual I'm pretty sure it does not use any of the vertical\lateral acceleration sensors, but would love to hear from anyone that knows definitively.

Hi,

None of the Suspension Accelerometers are used by the ABS.

ABS/ASR would typically use the Steering Angle Sensor and the Yaw Sensor / Lateral mounted at the vehicle centre of gravity.

The ABS Yaw / Lateral Sensor is also used for inclination detection for “Hill Hold” if it’s fitted.
