3200 - odd noise - engine related

Coming back from sharnbrook even yesterday, noticed an odd noise because I had the window open.
It started as a whirring sound, but then got worse to become a metal-on-metal screaming. Almost like a badly slipping fan belt.
Stopped to check under bonnet and Auxillary belt still present and turning, oil and coolant both present (in the car, not smeared down the road)

The sound is not there an engine idle.
No sound when driving at speed and car in neatral.
Sound increases with engine revs. Increases more with engine under load.
Sound does not increase in proportion with revs.

I do still have a lovely engine butble at idle and 5 bar oil pressure, so hoping it is ancilliaries

Drove the 15 miles home keeping below 2000 rpm with no ill effects. My water temp diod creep up from usual 70 to 90 degrees. Cannot face looking under the bonnet again just yet.

Hoping it might only be a failed water pump. NOT seized turbo or massive engine fault.

Ideas to pinpoint the fault? Don't want to move it again, even to get to a garage.

Rob , i would pm Nigelo direct he is the real 3200 guru , or possibly give Roberto at Grimaldi a ring , he may initially give you some realistic pointers , keeping me pinkies crossed for you

Sounds bearing'y are you an auto or manual box?

matt

manual box.
thought about bearing / clutch/flywheel. Had new cluctch and release bearing fitted last year by Roberto Grimaldi.

Will have a look and listen when I get home tonight, if there's any daylight left.

Its a difficult one to diagnose over the forum, I would need to see/hear it. Nothing obvious is springing to mind.

If I had to guess, it sound like the transmission/clutch.

will have a look tonight and record some sound / video.
Not sure my ears / heart / wallet can bear it again, but needs must.

Ok then, we can start a new section? SportMaserati Clinic.

Upload your problems via video for diagnosis.

Dr Loz is in the building, ha ha!

Hope its a nice cheap fix for you. Saw the car at Sharnbrook parked by he steps, looked very nice. I would have parked next door but there were a few bikes in the slot when i arrived.

How bad is a water pump change on the 3200 and 4200?

On a 3200 I know its cambelt off, about 3hrs labour.

On a 4200, I am not sure, it might be easier, but could still be chain driven although unlikely, anyone?

Here you go, the waterpump on the 4200 is chain driven but off a separate gear, so you dont have to remove the timing chains to change it:

I would appear that the difficult bit is to get access if you were to do it in situ. Probably water radiator and aircon rad out, front grill and maybe even from bumper.

Hi Grinzz
Are you in the 4200 or (orange) GS I spotted at sharnbrook?

Not sure about waterpump job, tempted to try it myself. No way if it involves cam timing

Sorry - I do love that colour though.
I can't keep up - was talking to the Lmab lot and they have yet another language to describe a similar colour "Arancia Atlas"

My brother calls it burnt orange, my wife calls it copper, my physio calls it brown. Whatever you call it, its pretty obvious in car parks!

Love look of your assetto, if i'd seen one that clean i'd probably have been tempted over to the dark side (forced induction).

Matt, on the 4200 the water pump is integral with the oil pump, so it's an engine out job. Could Rob's problem be a belt tensioner failing?

Sorry you're having the problem Rob. Hope you get it sorted without having to kidnap the bank managers dog.

You might have hit the nail bang on the head there. Might even pop out there now in my PJ's to have a look!
