3200 valved exhaust?

Here's a question for you exhaust buffs, I know Larini makes valved back boxes for the Gransport, but does anyone make them for the 3200? I've done a brief google search but come up with nothing. A company in the states does what they call EVCs within a centre section for the BMW M3, but that's all I can find.

I'm very happy with the exhaust sound I have when driving normally - I wouldn't really want any more attention than I get already, especially when driving through less salubrious areas, but some exhaust valves connected to the sport button, or a hidden button I suppose, would be a fun addition for 'let your hair down' occaisions. However, not sure it'd be worth the £1600+ for a Larini set, as I'm sure it'd be even more if they had to specially build them for the 3200...

Anyone have any thoughts? Do you reckon a good exhaust place ought to be able to modify an existing system by just adding in these EVC valves?

I understand the GS ones are in the final tail pipes...I guess if you were good at welding you could make you own from a expired GS set

How is there a difference in sound if they're in the final tailpipes (if I undestand correctly, after the back boxes?) - is it just like having a third tailpipe?

Yes larini can do them for the 3200 , they now have a valve supplier and can fit them to any box , so can MIJ birmingham for a price

Interesting...as you may remember when Mark was replcaing the back boxes on my car, he went to MIJ - is that why you mentioned them Loz? When I bought the car from him I rang MIJ and transferred the lifetime warranty into my name. I'll give them a call and see what they say and I'll speak to Larini too and ask how much it would cost to fit the valves to my current boxes.

Do you know how they activate the valves, can they connect them via the sport button, or is it an aftermarket button hidden under the dash affair?

You can have either Chris, you will need to buy the Vacuum solenoid as used on the gransport , not too expensive then just a case of adding the valves and some simple wiring up , either to the sport button or independently

I have spoken to MIj about this around 2 years ago and they said it would be no problem

Have just spoken to MIJ and they explained they couldn't add the valves to the existing system, they'd need to replace the existing back boxes with new.

Apparently the new boxes would involve a Y-pipe entering the back box, with one limb of the 'Y' entering one half of the back box with ordinary 'insides', and the other limb of the 'Y' entering an empty chamber incorporated into the other half of the back box. It's in this part of the 'Y' that the valve would be, so with the valve closed, the gases exit through the normal half of the box as usual, and with the valve open, they also exit through the chamber, increasing the noise...

He said they're looking at getting the valves in at the end of September - 3 types, remote activated, wired switch activated, and throttle activated at 3500 revs

He couldn't quote a price at present.

To be fair Chris when i spoke to them 2 years ago ish , i was supplying the valves off a set of used gransport boxes which i had the offer to buy cheap , they quoted me around £650 to adapt them into a new Stainless steel set for a 4200 which they would purpose make, there standard boxes look OK but i was also in talks with Larini aswell and their research and development was far more advanced into this at the time hence i took the route i did

No Chris , at the time i think they were quoting £545 for the new boxes and a £100 for the adaption if i supplied the used GS valves,

Not a bad deal to be honest but it was sort of experimental and i was unsure , dealing with them at a distance , Mark was the only one who had experienced their boxes but that as you know was 3200 related and not 4200, It was either Devon/Larini or Birmingham MIJ , and seeing as i was arranging to meet Safrane/Masersod devon seemed the most viable option at the tme

Do all Gransports come with valved backboxes? Whereabouts are the valves in the sytem?

Yes its standard fitment on the GS , but standard even with the valves open its tame, compared to the Larini valve open system , about the same as larini valves closed , if that make sense

So all I need is to find some GS back boxes at a breakers, and take the valves off them?

Or have a chat with David at Larini ,im sure he would flog a couple , and he has the Vacuum solenoids aswell

Oooh just had a thought Chris , i have a set of rear boxes arriving from Larini this week hopefully , was going to put them on the 4200 and rig them up with a loud button , its being sold shortly, and i was thinking of taking off the Tubi's off Now tubi's with a set of Valves and a loud button hasn,t been done before ,

Sounds like a plan! But surely Tubi's even with the valve closed are going to be a ddamn sight louder than my current MIJ back boxes?

are you thinking of selling the Tubi's Loz? You've got me thinking now...How easy would it be to weld valves in to the entry pipes?

Oh sorry, you have a 3200, missed that one, dunno how with such a large blatantly obvious avatar like that.

I am not sure if I would gut the GS back boxes and bodge the valves in, what I would do is get David at Larini to do them for you. then you buy the solenoid for £25 from Eurospares and all the pipes and unions for about another £25 then plumb it yourself using my guide above.

It will cost you £2k all in, which considering the back boxes will be £1800 is a bargain.

Or, get new valves and have the manufacturer of your current boxes do it for you.

Does sound good Matt - and I know from all you guys have said on previous threads that Larini are the best - but I'm just can't justify £2000 on a new exhaust at the moment, especially when there's nothing actually wrong with the setup I have at the moment - it's just that I'd like the option of having a bit more noise when I wanted. I suspect either getting hold of some valves from GS boxes from a breaker, or new from Larini as Loz suggests, and then having them fitted to my current boxes, may be the best (and cheapest) option for me...
