HI Guys

I have recently purchased an 2004 4200. The brake disc are in need of a skim / replacement. The cost of replacement is £230+vat each plus fitting. I can get the skimmed on the car using the latest disc skimming machine as seen on wheeler dealers but the cost is £800+vat. I can take them off myself and have found a local engineering firm who will skim them for me for £60 the set. One question is can they be skimmed or do they have to be ground due to hardness of disk???

Regards

Martin

Really enjoied the 1st week of ownership shame I now have to replace the clutch!!! (not me but did not know about the % wear in the service preint out when I purchased the car)

Hi Martin, shame you didn't find us first!

There are Ferrari 550 discs at 1/3 price plus much cheaper pads..........save yourself some money!

Indeed. I read this as not too late. New discs and pads all round. Mucho dinero saved.

£800 just to skim sounds like a rip off, but that's just me

Yes this is mainly the labour cost 2 hours per wheel.

The garage did say he could ask the boss about cosy when I said it was about the same as cost of new discs/rotors

Hold on, will put up link, plus whose doing the clutch? Do you think the car had a clutch reading done before you bought it.......might ask the seller(trade?)....for some comeback?

Sure is. There's lots of threads on here, and many difference of pads to pick from. If memory serves, I did full pads and discs for about £600 plus fitting.

Opie may offer you a discount if you mention the forum.

Not sorted the clutch replacement yet. The clutch is not slipping yet but from what I can see in service paperwork had 95% wear indicator last service in 2013 (3000 miles ago). The noise when cold at pulling away from the threads I have read on here sounds like release bearing.

Clutch was replaced at 56k now 95k

So budgeting for a clutch is a good idea. The noise may well be the spigot bearing, which squeals.
The wear readings have been know to be wildly inaccurate, so, even with 40k on it, it may have some life in it yet :)

My clutch (changed at 13k) is now at 58k so 45k done; the owl hoot is lessened in sports mode but there seems to be no evidence the hoot is causing any damage whatsoever, it is just the annoyance and embarrassment. I believe the clutch works far better if you do not dither on pull away, not F1 starts but not like your granny either... May as well drive the clutch till failure unless you are planning major works or a European trip of several thousand miles (i.e. the centenary trip). I don't have a current reading for mine but I'm sure it would be high.

Welcome anyway to the madness :)

Anyways, you're on the ball, be sure, given its age to get all replaced, false economy otherwise, as labour is 1/2 the cost.

I've just had my discs skimmed for £65 a disc but they are very very expensive AP Racing brakes (£1200 for front discs alone! Yikes!). It wasn't because of wear but actually because of surface rust. There is plenty of meat on the discs unless they are very badly worn or lipped. The only reason why this is not done so regularly any more is cost. In most cases, new discs cost not much more.

Car is 2004 but has private plate from last owner who's name was HUG.
Really like the drive experience. Had a 200 mile trip up to my parents on Sunday.

I think the car given the colour and standard exhaust is understated.

Many thanks for the help and advice.

PS I am in Hampshire on the south coast Pic was taken in Lee on Solent at the hovercraft Museum.
