The ignition key can stick. When you turn the key to start the engine. It springs back but sometimes not all the way to the correct position.
Its happened twice to me and the indicators not working were the give away it had happened. You can leave the car running but gentley turn the key as though you were turning it off. You should feel it click back into the correct position and everything should work as normal.
I assume its the spring sticking or getting a little tired that causes it.

I think you can just lubricate the mechanism Darren. It only happens every now and again with mine so its not a major problem to me. Voicey or phil in nz can probably confirm but i think you can just remove the steering column surround and clean and lubricate in situ.
