They are centre punch ‘peaned’, you may be able to squeeze them down enough to get the strip over. Or carefully work with a dremmel. Probably easiest to cut them off though. An epoxy putty would fix it back in place when done.

Drill the tops off the rivets from behind, then I guess you'll need to glue or something.

So if I drill down into the rivet, I should be able to pull it out? Any risk of dislodging the plastic strip underneath and damaging it? You can't get behind the rivet so am I right in thinking that blind rivets were used and I will never be able to remove it entirely; you may have realised that I am already well outside of my technical expertise here but every day is a school day.

You need to be careful. It looks like a pin that's been peened over to me, so I'd be aiming to drill off the widened part then gently lever the ends up over the rest of the pin and slide it out. Very odd construction.

Otherwise, just mask it!

You could also file the top of the retaining pin down until it is narrow enough to have the strip pull up over it. The more material you have left the more options you have to reattach it.
