4200 Front Pipes/Cat Removal

A few jobs on the car may involve the removal of the front exhaust pipes which consist of the Catalytic converters. Their removal is pretty straight forward.
First job is to give all the nuts and bolts a squirt of WD40 / Plus Gas or whatever; this is preferably done the night before to give it a chance of working its magic. Jack up the car as high as you can and support securely on stands.

Remove the frame cross member held in place by four 13mm bolts. Mark one side with a paint pen or something so it goes back the same way.

Remove the antiroll bar mounts four 13mm nuts, and allow the anti rollbar to drop. This gives you the clearance to get the pipes out.

You can un-plug the connectors to the four Lambda sensors if you wish but I found that there was plenty of loose cable so didn't bother. And this means they don't get mixed up.

Remove the four Lambda sensors. You may get away with a 22mm spanner but it's best to use a proper Lambda socket as they are very tight. If you like me left the cables intact take care when unscrewing as not to kink the cables too much, and when refitting wind the cable a few times so when you screw them home they end up straight.

Un-screw the two temperature sensors 15mm

Slacken off the clamps at the first joints where the fit in to the crossover box 15mm

Finally remove the four bolts in each manifold flange and lower the pipes. Use a block of wood or similar to support the crossover box and a little twisting and pulling should see the front pipes part company at the joints.

Take this opportunity to have a look at the cats for any damage and give them a shake to check for any signs of rattling.
