Hi all. Just purchased my second 4200 a manual and selecting 1st and 2nd gear is difficult. I understand from the previous owner that it has recently had all the linkages replaced. Is this normal and if not what could be the cause? Any help much appreciated as I am finding this annoying and stopping me from fully enjoying driving the car!

Try changing the gearbox/axle oil, see my thread from last night.

Emblem Sport Cars did the linkages for the previous owner. I have no idea if they are adjusted properly how do you do that?. Will change the box and diff oil and see if that helps.
When you change the oil in the gearbox/diff do allow a while for it all to drain out and when refilling even though it might seem like it's full with oil coming out the fill hole it takes a while to find it's way into the diff, so leave it for half hour and start topping up again. Mine started coming back out the fill hole after only about a litre, I left it a while and put some more in, eventually getting about 2.5 litres in, to get the full 2.7 litres in I'm guessing you would need to drain down overnight.

Thanks for that. I was told turning the wheels several time helps to circulate the oil and speed the process up.

Is it difficult to select gear with the engine off and the clutch depressed?
I will check this evening and report back. Also I checked the last service receipt and gearbox oil is listed and that was only 1000 miles ago so maybe not the oil.

If it’s difficult to get into first when stationary with the engine running but ok with the engine off it could be the clutch not disengaging properly.

It could also be that the linkage/pivot arm is seized that’s on the side of the gearbox.

OK i have check it without the engine on and it feels fine a bit notchy but not difficult to engage first or second. What do i need to do to check the hydraulics are disengaing the clutch enough? Thanks

I had a similar issue, ended up clutch pedal was not returning all the way. Clutch pedal spring was worn. Even a few mm affects the clutch master cylinder. Try pulling the clutch pedal up then depress and put it into gear.

Thanks for the advise but unfortunately that did not help.

Pilot bearing could be bad. When it's internal friction goes up, the shaft will start turning when it should not. Then engaging gears wil be difficult.
