4200gt road tax

Excuse my ignorance, but I'm curious to know why the 4200gt road tax falls into the lower price bracket? I was always under the impression any big guzzler registered after 2001 would be circa £500 a year to tax.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining the tax is £280 a year, but why does it qualify for the lower rate?

Think you'll find you have the dates wrong , its from April 2006 , my Gransport 55 plate and registered Jan 2006 is same as yours at £280 per annum , yet Matts old Gransport 3 months younger reg april 2006 was in the £400 bracket

There are some crucial dates when it comes to road tax:
1st January 1973 - vehicles constructed (note: constructed, not registered) before this date are tax exempt.
1st March 2001 - vehicles registered after 1/1/73 and before this date fall into two categories for tax: engines under 1549cc and over 1549cc. All cars, no matter what their emissions, are taxed according to the engine size bands. Currently £135 and £220
23rd March 2006 - vehicles before 23/3/06 with emissions over 225g/km (i.e. any Maserati!) are capped at Band K excise rate, currently £270. This saves £205 p/a against 4200s and Gransports registered after 23/3/06

Succinctly put Mark

I think the saving on a pre 23/3/06 car is a bonus, but can't imagine anyone making a purchasing decision based on this given the running costs generally!

A saving of £205 a year is worth having...if you are deciding between 2 cars just either side of 23/3/06.

The car tax change in March 06 has actually had a big impact on used car values. The then Labour government introduced it retrospectively a year later which was very underhand.

fantastic, thanks for the detailed replies. I was always naive to all this but it makes sense now.

And new i should imagine Bob , most company cars / personal cars bought on monthly allowance weren financed on a 4 year package , that extra £800 over 4 years must of had a detrimental effect in some cases

The point that concerns me with post April 06 cars is that this is uncapped and you can bet your bottom dollar that successive blood sucking chancellors will hike away in years to come...

That worries me too. Don't mind as much if it is changed going forward as I expect it but retrospective is not fair.

As soon as the Treasury work out everyone's started driving about in pre-April '06 supercars you can bet they'll come looking for more cash to squeeze!
