Isn't There environmental and legal issues about getting the air conditioning gasses recovered and pumped back in?
I'm sure only certified garages are allowed to handle refrigerants.

Im pretty sure any AC compressor discussed on this thread will not have any refrigerant inside it

Air Conditioning Compressor...it compresses the refrigerant...of course it would have refrigerant in it.

Hence, why I ask that an air con tech should recover the refrigerant before it's dismantled.

There will be no gas in a bare compressor. It is illegal to work on a refrigerant circuit containing R134a. Once it has been removed by a licensed individual you can do what you like. You will need said licensed individual to leak test and refill once any work is done.

Even a system which has leaked to the point of not working will still have some gas in it, so to be legal, this will need to be recovered before doing any work.

Ah. So.
There was me thinking we only discuss compressors on cars whose A/C is not working, so all refrigerant likely leaked out.
A ever I have learned better from forum experts :)
Thanks guys.

Supposed to be discussing where to buy replacement compressors from,
Now I've got to send the hazmat suits back as it turns out it's quite safe to buy another.

Apologies, if I come around as having a go at you, I'm not.
I'm just saying that it's illegal or at least frowned upon for anyone to start pulling apart the air con system of a car or even house. Stuff like this, I'd leave to a certified garage.

A bit pedantism going on re the specifics, but to be honest we probably have 500 accidents in the UK on any given day ........so what happens to those burst refrigerant pipes/heat exchangers ...................it goes into the atmosphere ...........its not the end of the world unless your name is greta ................the law was implemented for the increased volume of cars than entered the end of life scenario ie the breakers yards

The obvious thing to do is to take the car to your local friendly aircon person, ask them to de-gas it, then do the DIY compressor and dryer change, before going beck to get it re-gassed. That's what I did when I last had to change a compressor. The de-gas was free.
