ADVICE & OPINIONS - BUY A QP OR ANOTHER EXEC/SPORTS SALOON/HATCH?

Morning all

I have been trying to roll a personal car use into work use and used the XC90 for a few years. Always seems to be a compromise both ways though so not ideal as a work vehicle although pretty good. Not so good a nice personal vehicle. I don't think this rolling into one really works so looks like I will buy a 2nd hand van in to the business for work use. So something like a Merc Vito or VW Transport. A mid size panel van maybe crew van.

That leaves me an open playing field for a personal car. It could be anything really so hatch or saloon or coupe. It won;t do tons of miles and could sit in the garage when not used so can be looked after so not needing to live outside.

Obviously a QPV is an obvious option and Robert (RWC) has a very nice example that can be had for circa £25k. I've had one and really like them but was thinking a 4.7 GTS would be where I would be looking for circa £25k. Anyone had or driven both a GTS and an S so can offer an opinion on the obvious ride differences?

There are QPV GTS's out there at less thatn £25k:

I had a 2011 Jag XJ and also really liked this so that could be an option as well. A Supersport or XJR are possible.

Or something a little left field:

I had an E55K Estate and also really like these and their engine/box but the saloon is looking a bit dated and would have no need for an Estate. However the newer model E63 is a different beast. Forget the wrap but gives an example of what is out there:

Or cheaper option:

It won't need to be a diesel but a fast petrol with 6 or 8 or maybe silly 12 cylinders preferred. Ideally £10-£15k. Seems like £15k would be a decent budget to aim for but would spend upto £20k if required.

Any thoughts or ideas?

There are two silver QP GTS for sale around the same money. The one you hVe posted something is niggling me. Have a look at the side picture and the skirt doesn't seem to fit right. The other silver one has been for sale for ages. A thorough inspection needed on both those. I would always buy a QP GTS over any QP model but Roberts 4.7 S is the better buy I think. Plus he has GTS springs and additions that brings it pretty close to a GTS spec in all but name.

I had an E39 M5 and loved it. Yes later ones were quicker but E39 was the gem in the M5 range. Old now but still a beautifully balanced, fast M car. Better quality than the V10 as well. The interior used better materials than the later cars.

Never had an E39 M5 but always wanted one. Have had 2 x 540i M Sports though that were cracking cars. One saloon and an estate....both Auto's.

Just in case as it does happen did you check the WBAC price to see? Sometimes it can surprise. I sold the work Hilux to them as they gave me a price I couldn't beat selling privately.

If you can afford a 4.7 GTS, go for that. The brakes, suspension, alcantara interior and noise all set it apart from the regular car. That said, there’s no doubting that Roberts car is a *******.

In case this is at all helpful, I’m about to sell my Nissan Navarra king-cab which I’ve run as a commercial vehicle / company car. Only 1 owner (me), 2012, full history, metallic grey, with black leather interior. Top spec car, with air con, parking sensors, reversing camera, great Sat-Nav, toe hitch, roof bars, etc. 141,000 miles at 32mpg, and being serviced next week. It’s never put a foot wrong - just a brilliant workhorse. I’ll be asking £5990.

Ffs! The word I used is the name of the thing that you pull at Christmas, with a paper hat and joke inside.

Dean, as you can get a car cheap through the trade why not wait and see what comes up through that route?

That’s nuts Ewan. My 9 year old tried to by a box of them a few hours ago with a fiver I gave him and the cashier refused to sell them to him. He handed the fiver back to me, I gave it to her and she gave him the box of knackers.

Thanks Ewan. Wasn't sure about the brakes between S and GTS. Forgetting the valved sports exhaust as well as interior and suspension. Quite a difference really. Did you find your GTS too hard or OK?

Thanks for the offer on the Nissan but I sold our Hilux Invincible Double Cab pickup as it was a weird thing. Didn't quite hit my spot for my work use. Massive long thing but the load area wasn't much bigger than my E55K estate. Couldn't get anything long in it or that high. We had the back box on it as well.

A midsize crew cab I think is what I am going to go for. Can be bought by the business with full VAT/tax relief. Seems the HMRC rules are it needs to be 1000kg+ payload and bigger load area than passenger space. Gets treated as van then and not as a car for tax purposes. Also all use will be business/commercial anyway.

I am keeping an eye out for what comes up as you mention as makes sense. Sometimes though when buying big old lumpy cars it is sometimes worth paying a bit more and buy from dealer. Just to give a little bit more coverage and piece of mind for what it is worth. If I get the work van sorted first and get the XC90 sold then I have no rush and can take my time. If something comes up interesting through the trade I will just buy it and run it then sell at profit or cost at some point and keep flipping through them.

The XC90 V8 I have will be a silly cheap 1 previous owner full supplying main dealer service history from new for circa £5k!

Thing I don't like about the QP GTS is lack of DS and and lack of chrome trim. Big cars suit chrome bits. Could always add that back, but still, it's an auto and will ever remain so.

Could be tempted when I calm down tho, maybe when I'm 60.....

Both are BEAUTIFUL cars in all senses. Any e39 with a V8. Solid, torquey, fast and well finished. Wish I still had mine!

Good thing about an E39 540 or E39 M5 is likely fairly low running costs in comparison to likely QP running costs. Also likely zero depreciation whereas most QP's have got some way south to go yet. Still got a massive soft spot for a QP though!
