Sensitive area, patient confidentiality and professional ethics being at the centre. You probably have incomplete medical tests and history data making giving advice extremely challenging.

Have you considered a private professional consultation for a second opinion supplying test results and x-rays that another clinician at a different hospital can review?

You do not need a GP referral for a private consultation. You can book it online with a private provider's website.

Thanks - sadly what we have is conflicting diagnosis from two physicians in the same hospital looking at the same information.

We are seeking a private consultation, on heat, looking for friendly chat on the process and how best to proceed.

Even basic care is sadly lacking, my son waited 2hrs after asking for a glass of water, in the end his mother drove over and managed to get him a drink before anyone on the woman’s did.

Pretty sad star of affairs

Sorry to be reading this showing what a state the service has got into.
Really hope you can get what's needed done as soon as.

It was the same when I was in hospital five years ago - I found the cleaning staff the most caring - and I used a sports water bottle as sometimes it was difficult to sit up properly to drink without spilling water everywhere with a glass

Thanks - our next worry is that if for any reason the operation does snot take place before close of play Friday - he will be impacted by the next round of strikes.

The strikes do not affect private treatment. You should consider forgetting the NHS and just go privately via either BMI Group or the Spire Group who between them are two of the largest private providers. The NHS is completely screwed up. Just dig into your pocket and pay the man to sort out your issues.

Clinical opinions can vary. Friendly chats are not going to help. Just book a private consultation and move forward.

It’s not as easy as that or we would have done exactly that.

Trying to navigate getting him discharged in the middle of treatment and accepted by a private consultant has not been possible.

There is no private provision at the hospital to transfer to either.

It’s what I wanted advice on and what O have spent 36 hours trying to sort.

I hope you get this sorted soon, and a satisfactory outcome. I'm glad I have kept my Bupa going, although I swing from plusses and minuses, a bit like justifying a classic car lol.

My son has full health insurance as do we, but it hasn’t helped in this emergency.

Works well for planned events.

At times like this it makes me appreciate how well things work in France with the Mutual insurance top up making the system work well.
Good Luck Sam and family that progress continues quickly.

You have to remember he has a leg in bits and in the middle of treatment.
You did not mention he is currently in mid-treatment or that he has a leg in bits.

No clinician with any sense will take on advice in such a situation. You are caught in the present setup with the options being offered at the current treatment centre.

I hope you and the patient achieve a resolution acceptable to each of you.

Is it not possible to get the two surgeons to discuss the matter? They might come to an agreement on what is the best way to proceed giving you more peace of mind. Or they can together give you possible outcomes and risks.

Sam, sorry to hear of your sons accident.
It does pay to push or at least not be too passive. My sister smashed her ankle and the bottom of her leg really badly a few years ago. She was due to go to a specialist hospital to have it put back together, but 9 (bed-blocking) days later her partner got so worried that he phoned a helpline number (found on an NHS poster on the wall) to express his concerns. About an hour later the nursing staff were preparing for her transfer.
I'd have to say that after this delay the care she received was brilliant and the complex operation was a real success.
Here's hoping your son will be on the mend soon.

Thanks for the good wishes.

Thankfully - operation took place today, all went well should be discharged tomorrow.

They continued to be useless in terms of communication- he came up from theatre at 13.00 but it took till 18.00 before they gave feedback on how it went and if it had been successful.

Thank you for the various posts and PM’s of concern, support, advice.

This could easily turn into a rant about the health service but I will resist.

After a successful operation yesterday he was told he would be discharged in the morning.

For no apparent reason, that process took all day and he eventually left the hospital at 7.15 pm and he was effectively “bed blocking “ until 4pm but that was entirely down to the hospital, my wife was there from 11am to collect him.

He was told yesterday what medication he would be prescribed yet part of the delay today was waiting for the prescription to be issues and then made up, why on earth they didn’t write the prescription last night I have no idea.

What we have witnessed felt like poor management, poor organisation and and lack of care……… that could be as a result of lack of staff I guess.

Good luck and a speedy recovery to your son, Sam. And thank you for not dragging the thread into an ‘ooh, isn’t the NHS awful’ discussion. The only thing that matters is the speedy recovery of your son. Best wishes.
