Augmented engine noise

What does everyone think of "Active sound design" in modern cars where they program the car to pipe fake engine noises into the cabin through the speakers while you are accelerating?

I have not had a car with it installed before and after test driving a few I find it seriously off putting, particularly in smaller cars where the noise seems to come from the wrong place... It would be better if you could turn it off via the settings on the car but that feature only seems to appear on some new electric vehicles.

Perhaps it's the first iteration of car generated entertainment. With a bit of AI it won't be long before the car generates music to accompany the ride based on how the car is being driven. Ride of the Valkyries and other epics being piped in accordingly!

I had a KIA on rent which had this under the drivers seat - noise and vibration, at least you could turn it off.

I don’t like the concept but Mrs BBs Golf R farts at the red line in sport and it sounds rather nice in a four cylinder DSG chav sort of way.

Vibration! Did anyone ever see the episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm when Larry gives Susie a lift?

Do it yourself (brrrrummmm) and you can even include tyre squeal around corners, v8 idling and brake lock up/skidding as you drive.

I was looking at new cars a while back and popped into the Audi showroom to look at an A7. I told the guy there’s one that goes past me every morning that sounds like a lovely V8, that’s the diesel six cylinder he says they’ve got speakers underneath.

Or

I can’t take the concept of “augmented” engine noises inside or outside the car seriously.

In fact when I first read a thread on here about car being fitted with speakers underneath, I thought it was a wind up and had to google it to check.

Make the most of it , it won't be long before all cars sound like a tube train leaving the station.

My GR Yaris has it , at least it's a performance car , putting it on bog standard cars to make them sound fast is laughable but it's the future , loud exhausts are anti social , just because you like it doesn't mean your neighbours are happy with it.

writing is on the wall, hair extentions, gel nails, body implants, hair seeding , teeth veneers
now brum-brum noises on the car.

The public gets what the public wants
I don't get what society wants
I'm going underground.

Ideally a huge car park with my naturally aspirated open exhaust V8.

I remember seeing a few early Ghibli diesels with the exhaust speaker kit fitted as an aftermarket modification
