Banging Wipers

Hi

Just finished a 2000 mile round trip throughout France - the 2010 QP Sport GT S was flawless - much to the annoyance of my Porsche owning friends....

But it has gave me a new problem to solve

In torrential rain the when the wipers (on auto) are at 'normal' speed they operate silently, however when they step up to fast mode, they develop an annoying knock as if they are going too far and are hitting their stops..

Can they be adjusted? Any thoughts would be welcome..

Hi Devonboy,
This may not be the case, but my wipers on my 1 series and other cars have started doing this when the rubber is old and semi perished by the sun. They aren't as flexible and when switching sides slap a bit. So maybe a case of needing a new pair of wipers.
Just a potential idea!

Most cars I have owned have slapped on fast. Maybe it's because they go on fast speed on auto it's apparent. If manual we very rarely have them on fast speed.

To solve this exact problem, I replaced the driver's side wiper arm.
Over time it had developed a looseness around the rivet where the arm meets the carrier.
A new wiper arm solved it plus positioning the arm so it didn't hit at full speed.

I have this problem. An intermittent banging noise when the wiper arm reaches the end of its arc. Can't quite tell if it is when it gets to the end of the upswing, or is a moment later when it changes direction. I intend to change the blades as a first step. Was there a thread about this - something about cutting down some standard (cheap) blade???

On mine it is not slap, but quite a serious 'clunk' or 'bang'. Could still be the blades, but sounds worryingly mechanical. Also surprisingly intermittent. Seems related more to speed of vehicle rather than speed of wipers, so could be about air pressure on the blades....

I had this on one of my Alfas (can't remember which one) and it was basically the arm of the wiper somehow came loose from the motor.
I tightened it up and all was good. Apart from when the wipers froze to the windscreen after it had rained and then froze. The motor was buggered after that, which needed replacing.

I remember, it was my 147 2.0 TS. (not that you'll be that bothered).

Mine is at the bottom of the Arc...will look at weather the casing is worn this weekend - as Autoglass fitting a new rear windshield tomoz

Check the arm is not coming into contact with the A pillars. ..this can occur when you are moving at speed and the arm has the added air pressure pushing it up the screen.

Check to see if there are any marks at the edge of the arms sweep on the A pillar. Or use a small strip of detail clay or children's plasterseen/playdoe and see if any impact marks are made.
