Bearing

Hi all,

Would appreciate your thoughts.....I am starting to suspect I have a bearing on the way out.....Shiltech couldn't find any issue but even the new tyres and alignment have not solved a droning noise which starts at around 50-80mph....it seems to be getting slowly worse. Its not deafening but as I am sure other owners on here will attest to, we do tend to be sensitive to unusual noises. I have read on other places that bearings tend to go on the rear and that sometimes checking for play or using a steth doesn't show up the issue - you've got to remove the unit and spin the hub.

So, has anyone had symptoms and had to replace either the front or rear? I am going to the Stealer on Monday and hope my independent warranty will cover it:(

Have a great weekend.
Cheers

Tim,
Sounds like it could be a bearing, I take it all the tyres are sound..?? You could jack the car up and do the in / out test on the top of the wheel, that sometimes shows up if any movement is there. If the bearing is dry and is getting hot after a run, which you should feel on the hub, you will know which one it is and which to replace.

Also, going round corners. Does it get louder on roundabouts (at 50 :D) )
Apocryphally NS bearings fail more in the UK doe to roundabouts, but....

Thanks. Brand new pzero's so it ain't the tyres. Plus it was faint on winters too. Don't have ramps so will have to see at the stealership.

Yes good thought - but believe calipers were lubed and cleaned during service and the fact its getting worse means its likely to be the bearing. Its got 80k miles on it so i wont be too surprised if it is a bearing!

Hahaha can't hear it over the sound of the engine at 7000rpm:) but seriously on curved sections of the local motorway do think its worse going around right handers (load on front left which is near/driver side in left hookers).

Tim,
It looks like you have it right, but run it and check for heat on each hub, that should point you in the right direction.

When one went on my 4200...it was more of a constant high pitched whirring as speed built up.....the rear nearside.........it wasn't so much the actual bearing but some other aspect of it failed.....sleeve/housing

It doesn't sound like it is the prop shaft bearings but just to eliminate that from the puzzle try driving at a constant speed and changing gears. If the drone changes then it could be prop shaft, if the drone remains constant then it is in the final drive (gearbox output, differential, or wheel bearing).

All,
Well I was right. Front left bearing was on its way. Now silent - just the woosh of wind noise. Touch wood no more issues for a while. Thanks to you all for your inputs

Good to get it sorted.....in mine, it was the housing that gave up......what was the issue with yours?

Not sure....they kindly delivered the car back and my independent warranty is taking care of the charge so wasn't too interested. However the steering is definitely tighter so there was obviously some play that had developed. Interesting it was front left......hopefully the others will keep going a bit longer. Onwards and upwards!
