Anyone got one or had one they can recommend? Was going to look at a Disco 3 or 4 but if I can get something a bit more interesting even 2WD and pop winter wheels/tyres on that is an option I guess.

Any thoughts or experiences?

Thanks. I have had winter wheels/tyres on many of my cars for the last 5 or so years and swear by them during the cold bits. Had my R129 SL60 AMG on 16" wheels/tyres with over 400bhp going through the rear wheels and that worked a treat so happy with 2WD.

My XJ though had to venture out for one short unplanned journey to take my son to school this year. No winter tyres on....got my boy to school then got stuck for over an hour trying to get to the end if the road! Difference on most cars with or without winter tyres is massive.

Had a TT 3.2 V6 S-Tronic Quattro for a bit with no winters. Many hairy moments in that!

The Disco is the way I've been swaying. Was trying to find something better to drive/quicker. Shame there are none or next to no V8 petrols around. Maybe I split it into 2 and get a Disco then a daily quick cheapish hack. Seen a couple of V8 XC90's that seemed interesting.

Much difference between Disco 3 to 4? Disco 4 is a little more than I preferred to spend especially if I need to add a daily hack in. Never had an Alfa & always wanted one so maybe room for a 159 or something with a nice V6

Yes. Quite a lot. 4 has a 3 litre v6 twin turbo that they use in the Jag XF. Better ride quality as well. And a nicer interior.

Agree with all of that. Tyres are what matter. On summer tyres in the snow, Haldex can be scary as it loses traction at the front so sends all the power to the back and drives like a 911. Audi never tell you that when you buy a transverse 'quattro'. The longitudinal engined Quattros are outstanding but the Q7 is the only seven seater. Why not an S Max?

We don't really need an S-Max or similar people carrier. Just sold the Touran that was very good for 5 years. Just want a spare kind of practical floating utlitly good at all jobs kind of thing. It would be ideal if I could convince the missus to ditch the Freelander in favour of a Disco 4 as that would work best....must try harder!

We had an xc90 for ages, it was great. I nearly bought a 7 seat Merc GL which I discarded as too expensive but I liked it. A friend has a 7 seat Santa Fe and loves it. Worth a look from a cost and reliability perspective. They also hold value well.

Agreed I liked the XC90 bought one cheap and very good alround except for the very gruff, unrefined and old tech D5 diesel engine. Couldn't stand the engine in the end so flipped it out after a few weeks. Seen a couple with V8's in that I'm sure would be much better.
Nearly bought a R63 AMG believe it or not last year. Very rare & a bit ugly but still a cracking car & not dear.
We looked at the Santa Fe when I got the Freelander for the missus & liked it but found the boot was pretty small as a 5 seat & hopeless when a 7 seat. The XC90's & Disco's seem to be a better bet.

Might see if I can find and drive a V8 XC90. Anyone got or had one?

we have had both a X5 and a Disco 3 loved the X5 just drives like a car with a good diesel engine, but the Disco is in a different class (IMO) for such a big car the engine really does pull its so comfortable and easy to drive the price of the 4 does make the 3 a good buy our local Landy dealer snapped our hands of for our 3. and if was in for a different car Landy all the time.

I have a V8 XC90, it is a very nice car with a lovely smooth free revving Yamaha built engine, I can fully understand why Noble chose it for their sports car. It is fast (for its size), comfy and spacious but the fuel economy is not great at around 19mpg average.

Thanks for the info. I think the Disco 4 seems like an obvious choice....if only they were a smidge softer on the prices ;) An XC90 V8 seems a little softer on the price and just a little different.

Thanks...sounds nice...not for sale is it?! The missus only gets about 26/27 mpg average out of the 2.2 SD4 Freelander and we don't do tons of miles so MPG is not the be all and end all.

if you can go for a 2014 + the road tax is around £285 before 2013 your upto £485+ for 12 months, then your looking at around £30,000+ dealer price. good luck with the search

Doesn't the new 'Freelander' come with 7 seats now? Depends on price and how often you need the extra seats but you could trade in the existing one and get the best of both worlds (with a bit left over for something more interesting?!).

Sorry but it is not for sale, the wife absolutely loves it and I think we will have it for a long time. It is quite funny having a XC90 that is decently quick, people definitely do not expect to get left standing by it and is does take them by surprise.
Unfortunately good low mileage late model V8 XC90s are very rare beasts especially in the desirable Executive spec, I wish you luck if you do decide you want one.
