Best trickle charger for a 3200

Getting really fed up with my capricious Optimate trickle charger, which never seems to simply get down to the task of actually charging my bl00dy battery!

So with winter coming I need to invest in a new one. Does anyone have a particular recommendation for a bulletproof make/model of charger? I know Ctek are well thought of but they seem to have about a thousand varieties and I have no experience of which one might be most appropriate!

Cheers.

whs!

I posted up at the weekend that they were on offer again now.
Think someone said some time ago it was basically a Ctek branded differently but whatever it is it works perfectly with 6V and 12V batteries.
I had one connected to a bike all winter and had no issues whatever.

Good stuff - we have a Lidl in our town. Looks like the offer comes in on Sunday, according to their website. I'll give it a try!

I believe there was a myth floating around the internet that the Lidl one was a CTEK, but it was disproven.

Either way, CTEK aren't the be all and end all of chargers so no real worry. The Lidl one has been proven over and over by many a forum like this and seems to come very highly recommended and is less than half the price of alternatives, so if they are available, buy one - or 2 if you want a spare ;) if I was in the market for one, this is what I'd do.

Personally, as an alternative, for future reference / if the Lidl ones are out of stock, I can recommend the Oxford Oximiser 900.
I've had 2 for 4 or 5 years now, used daily on a variety of batteries in my Elise, 944 S2, Alfa diesel...
You used to get them for around £20, but a quick google search shows me that they seem to be £30 now (and have changed colour).

Only problem I've had is that the one wired to the car corroded on the Elise (the battery is in the front compartment, near an open grill and the rad, so pretty open to the elements / heat cycles / all the stuff you don't want to avoid corrosion!)
A replacement was a couple of quid from eBay though and I suspect most will be the same.

If you've got bags of cash to throw at one, you can buy an official Maserati one on eBay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-OEM-M...929006?hash=item4b08f6a4ee:g:d2QAAOSwEK9T0A8I
I have one of these (it came with my car) and can confirm it works, and is basically a low model / low feature CTEK with a bit price tag and a European plug ;)

If you want to spend twice as much on the same thing you can get a similar one in red with a horse on it:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-F...752485?hash=item25c2e7ab25:g:KesAAOSwl8NVVE~R

There are usually similarly prices black ones with a bull too, but they must be out of stock ;)

You get other branded CTEKs for more than a normal CTEK too, Mercedes, Maybach, Aston Martin, Alfa 8c, Bentley, Porsche for equally silly inflated prices.

They are all the 6 stage XS 0.8 (which seems to be the US800 if you are over the pond..) so you can also buy the same thing for Maserati/3 or Ferrari/6 ;)

I use a CTEK MXS 5.0 on my Mk1 Golf and ML270. It trickle charges and reconditions the batteries. Always worked well for me having had it for around 5 years now.

I have 2 CTEK MXS 5.0 as well, one for the Maser and the other for the Tuscan. Great trickle chargers, never had any issues during many years of usage.

Two Cteks here, had them over 7 years. One is fairly standard, other does conditioning, bikes, and frost setting I think. No issues with either.

Lidl didn't get planning permission in these parts.
I have an Oxford Optimate thingy, a free gift from a Bike magazine, no issues with either the car or bike battery - car starting is a different issue- well it is a 3200

I'm intending to try the Lidl charger once I get one. Just one question about using a trickle charger.......are you supposed to vent the battery whilst charging?

I have seen "facts" stating both you should and you don't have to and no idea if there is a correct answer.
I don't vent when I am charging and so far nothing has blown up or gone on fire.
Thinking about it I don't remember seeing anything on a modern battery which looks like a vent. Are they not all sealed now?
Still have vent on old style bike battery but not on sealed car ones.
