i was wondering if any of you guys would be up for a bit of fun, we can look getting started next year

the idea is to hold a little challenge of sorts,
there are a lot of cheap Italian cars for sale at the moment due to problems, i suggest we have a limit for purchasing and fixing an car.
suggested rules are:-
any car but no later than 2003,
no engine size large than 2.5.
no weight limit.
a limit of £1500 for purchasing and fixing, getting the car ready
cars to be road legal, taxed and tested.

once we are ready to go too a racetrack and race, probably open track days but if enough of us then maybe look at booking the tracks?

we run 4-6? races a year maybe one each quarter, the over all winner gets a prize eg a weekend away, payed by the other drivers/teams?
at the end of each season any driver/team can offer to buy any other drivers car for £1500 and if offered you have to sell!.

obviously the more people who want to take part the better, would suggest we do teams of a min of two people so a driver and a fixer, and the costs are split between the team.
feel free to add more ideas/suggestions.

as much fun as this sounds it's quite a commitment with time, money and also running another car what with making it roadworthy or having a trailer and tow car.

A few years ago I entered the annual practical performance car magazine £1000 challenge... I came second out of 20 cars in a 1991 200sx that i swapped for a bottle of wine and a cake baked by my missus.

All i did to it was suspension, free flow exhaust and doubled the boost from the turbo. Did 1/4 mile in under13 seconds and topped out at 170mph, not bad for a roadworthy rust bucket banger.

I blew the big end bearings a few weeks later at brands hatch, so as much fun as it was the car didn't last more than 2 full days of racing.

So Dave are you proposing a 1 engine per car (at any one time) limit??? How is the project coming on???

I think it is a great idea but quite a commitment required by everyone to pull it off; I've got too much on next year for sure... I question the road legal requirement as well as that markedly bumps the cost to everyone and lines the governments coffers to boot. Pure track vehicles can be trailered around quite easily and if you damage it on the day you still have transport to get home!

Wouldn't you require a race licence for this?

Want cheap racing look here: http://www.pbmwc.co.uk/
I belive Grinz did this a couple of years ago.

as were are not doing it through any governing body no we dont need a race license, even if we book the tracks for sole use/

yes one engine per car ! lol... project is on a go slow at the moment the frame has been done for the rear engine but i havnt had time to do anything about it though. its never been a rush job ether took me a year to upgrade the front engine upto a 3.8 so it'll be done when its done lol.

Re- road legal cars, i suppose we could drop that and just make sure they are safe. i like to believe we are all sensible people and know whats safe and no so mot, tax are not really necessary.

agree it would be a commitment by everyone that one of the reasons i suggested a one race per quarter it gives time to sort out any problems with the cars between races.
I dont mind arranging the track hiring etc so all the teams need to worry about is the cars, getting them to the race and cost of track.

we can discuss what tracks are suitable and what people think are acceptable costs for the tracks once we know how many people want to be involved.

Most organised trackdays frown on any sort of racing, even down to timings. Hiring a track might be expensive.

It's a nice idea but might end op being out of my budget, good luck though
