Boot Lock

Hi all,

Have been meaning to post something about this and have finally got round to it - hope it is of use to someone!

Anyway, I, as have others, have never been able to get my boot lock working from the key. Having shut the power off and shut the boot by accident I did manage to get it open once but it was a right faff with one person sat on the boot while someone else turned the key.

So one of the jobs I have been meaning to do was replace the rear Maserati script on the boot as mine was a bit worn. In the process (following the excellent guide on here) I thought I would also investigate the boot lock some more as the inner boot card was removed anyway.

On removal you will be able to see the whole mechanism clearly:

Now initially I thought the problem was with the mechanism being seized somewhere, either at the lock or at the latch itself. On investigation this was clearly not the case as both moved freely - probably because of the WD40 and other oils I has poured down the barrel previously!

However I did notice that the cable mechanism did not begin to 'engage' the latch until the key had turned quite far - you can see there in a screw on the cable to adjust this. So I removed some of the slack using the adjuster - this improved matters a little in that the key engaged the cable sooner but it was still quite stiff.

I then removed the 'latch' and the cable itself. (Sorry I forgot to take a photo at this part) I was then able to carefully poor some light oil down the cable so the action was a lot better. What was more evident though, was that over time a mild 'kink' had developed in the cable near the main latch. On straightening the wire and putting it all back together it was hugely improved! My key now works with only normal pressure needed!

So to conclude if yours is not working I would suggest it may be one, or more likely a combination of these three factors (seized lock, slack cable or kinked cable) causing the problem. I really simple fix that has stopped me being paranoid about closing the boot with power off now!

I hope this may be of use to someone!
