Brexit Deal

At the end of the day the way forward will be determined by how much 'pain' the UK vs the EU can endure by not having a workable trade agreement in place. When Merkel starts to get real pressure from BMW and others and it starts to cost real jobs and businesses in Germany, then watch the discussions take on a new urgency, and perhaps a willingness to compromise.

Yes, I don’t disagree. I assume that U.K. manufacturers will exert similar pressure here

The pips are going to be squeaking everywhere, but the politicians and the (relatively) rich won’t be the ones taking the pain in my view.

It is going to be interesting to see how it plays out.

If that's the case why did the EU commission feel the need to reiterate that in the contingency planning document.

That’s like the ‘few good men’ where cruise asks the general ‘if everyone obeys your orders why did the private need to be transferred off the base for his safety’ !

Am I right in thinking that Fishing is the main sticking point?
So an export industry worth around $288m has scuppered the car export industry worth $41bn.

Well done Boris for the oven ready deal and free dinner with Ursula.
It is not about fishing (which represents <1% of trade volumes). It’s about agreeing to a level playing field on trade and taxes post divorce. eg avoiding the UK to drop it’s corp tax rate to 10% to attract EU corps to move their HQ to the UK.

‘A level playing field’ is, effectively, the EU‘s way of getting everything they want in a 4 word clause. It’s only when you dig deeper does spell out that that effectively ties us to their rules, and allows them to punish us if we transgress. If we tried something similar they would be shouting “bloody murder” about us.

I will be marrying Ms French to guarantee my freedom of movement 3rd time lucky :)
Is she aware of this plan or do we need to break it to her gently ;)

I reckon your second time around was the last time your hair saw some scissors and that “your freedom of movement” will be severely restricted by the short leash that she’ll have you on!

Apparently that had scallops for starters and turbot for the main.

'Apparently' it was to highlight a few issues.
And pavlova torub in the Australian deal element.

Johnson should have taken over a haggis, presented under some tartan fabric.
He could have then lifted said fabric and told them to kiss his ars3.

Not just fishing....more seriously (depending on your point of view of course) is the EU want to tie us to their rules and regulations to allow us to trade with them and they want a level playing field in terms of competition rules which will limit the level of assistance any future UK govt can provide to companies to win work and save/ generate jobs. Both of these conditions massively compromise UK's sovereignty and UK's ability to act independently to the EU. Can't see the EU changing their stance and we won't want to become a vassal state, always subservient to the EU, so I suspect UK will walk away with a 'no deal'.
Oh yes and there was also some talk about the EU policing compliance and fining the UK for any contraventions.
Yup, basically they want to tie us to all Eu rules, court judgements etc.....which is hardly leaving is it.

Said this years ago- the Eu cannot encourage anyone else to leave therefore it is not in their interests to negotiate anything remotely reasonable.

https://www.sportsmaserati.com/index.php?threads/brexit-deal.27598/post-664429 and subsequent posts.

Two- four wasted years that could have been used to prepare the country for leaving under such terms. A deal would have been a bonus. Instead Tory politicians bumbled along with ridiculous incompetence, Mays stupid deal, Johnson signing a withdrawal deal that is now potentially being revoked against international law etc etc etc

If the UK’s politicians had any nous and been honest from day 1 and stated this at the outset then many more would have known what to expect and the country would have been fully prepared for the no deal event.

Under promise, over deliver v “oven ready deal”....oops a big fat nothing and everyone now up in arms!

In most EU states residency ie PR is gained after 5 years living in an EU state. If you take residency and assuming you are a UK citizen you can return to UK as long as you like, you are still a UK citizen, taxation etc issues notwithstanding.
I went straight into New Zealand as a Permanent Resident having never been there before on the back of my skills.
The only condition was I had to stay in my first job for 3 months after that I could do as I wished and still can.
All the costs involved for checks on health not being a criminal and that my qualifications were genuine were paid by me and it took nearly 12 months.

This is not just a Tory mess, all political parties had a hand in getting us where we are today as well as the remain organisations. Everyone tried to thwart any deal that would be good for the UK, they can all say "I told you so" now that it looks like they succeeded.

I’m not sure there was ever a deal on offer from the Eu that was good for the Uk, was there?

Anything is better than the cluster*ck we are faced with now....

All this for a blue passport.....
It’s about a little more than a blue Passport but I agree with your sentiments.
We’ve elected the wrong politicians for just about any job they’re tasked with.
What a mess.
