Buying a Used Maserati Granturismo - what to look for

Dear all.

I'm looking at buying a Maserati Granturismo. I'm looking at a 2007-2009 4.2 variant.

Wanted to know what may be some of the things to look for when buying used.

Does this model have unusual issues with certain parts due to wear and tear? Seats, Brakes, steering etc etc.

Seems to be so little good advice when buying this model used.

Have seen a few.

One seems to have had an aftermarket job to it (a carbon fibre spoiler and the letters Maserati sprayed in black).

Many thanks for any advice.

These are very strong cars which the market appears to value much higher than previous Maseratis'. The two things to watch are:-
-where you are on the service interval as the 2/6 year services at a MD (£1600) are a lot cheaper than the 4/8 year services (£2600); and
-brakes and tyres. Brake life is good on most cars but replacement is expensive. If it helps my car is on 25000 miles and the pads are about half worn. The OEM P Zero tyres are about £1300 all round on 20" wheels and the rears might only last 5000-8000 miles. Fronts should do at least double that.

Thanks Big Bob.

Appreciated.

This particular example has 09 and 10 service history - and then no receipts.

Three owners since 08'.

Recently had a service at official dealership. 40,000kms on clock. Asking price is US$130,000.

The missed service interval is worrying me and thinking it's overpriced.

Ouch, that price seems punchy high. Obviously it may differ from the European market, but depending on the spec / engine, but assuming a 4.2, you're probably looking mid-high 30's to low 40's in ££'s - or I guess about $60-70,000 equivalent - in the UK.

Re. the missing service intervals, I think it goes without saying that if you can get someone with knowledge to do a check on it (especially at that price point), then it'd be money well spent.

I've had my 2008 4.2 for 18mths, only 14,000 miles on the clock when I bought it for £39k. It had some service history, but wasn't comprehensive and I really did gamble a bit. But, since having had it serviced, it was reported back to me that it was in an exceptionally good condition. I knew it had led a fairly easy life - and to be honest, I've increased the usage a bit compared to its historical position, but my gamble happened to come up good for me.

The only thing I've had to have done is a rear shock thus far, beyond normal servicing. Regarding tyres, the fronts are now on 10k. My rears have swapped around as I had a couple of (expensive) punctures. But, after about 6000 miles, they looked like they'd be ok for about 4-5000.

Thanks BigR.

Much appreciated.

Would be great to get other opinions on here from GT owners.

It's funny, we have some silly taxes in the UK but the Australian import duty on luxury cars seems to have failed as the domestic car industry has died so why don't they scrap it?

Agree with you, but not sure there's too many examples, especially in our country, where a government is prepared to scrap an anarchic tax when it generates so much easy, lucrative income for them.

Guess the bottom line is, people here will still buy them, even if they are strictly only available to the super wealthy.

Bell are you in sydney ?
Is it private sale or dealer ? Friend has 60,000 on his 4.2 it still seems to be running strong. Like the other owners have said brakes are expensive and check the tyres and service history.
Good luck

Hi Batman, yes Sydney.

If your friend is looking like selling on his 4.2, I may be interested. PM would be welcome. All the best. And thanks for the advice.

You could maybe ask for the full service history at your local dealer, they normally keep good records..??
