Can a 4.2 gt sound as good as a 4.7?

This has been done to death but I'm being lazy.

I'm pretty much set on a 4.2. I don't need more power. I drive mostly city so mc isnt for me. What I do need is a 4.2 with a better sound.

I've heard an xpipe and it was very nice but a little more raspy than 4.7s I've heard. Is there a way to get the full aural profile of a 4.7 with a 4.2? Or are there trade offs? Or will sticking a 4.7 back box on give 90% of the noise profile...?

The simple answer is no.

As the Yanks say, there's no replacement for displacement.
How very true......Or to quote the great Carroll Shelby... “There ain’t no substitute for cubic inches!” What a legend, the Texan chicken farmer, turned Maserati racer driver/winner, turned car builder. :D

The 4.7 valved back boxes are what you need and some sort of kit to control the valves unless you want it loud all the time.

They do sound similar, but the valves open all the way all the time.

OP if you're anywhere near, you're welcome to com listen to mine.

Back when the GT first came out I had the happy pleasure of trying one with a full Larini set up.

It had a fantastic note when pressing on and not too bad at normal speeds.

There will be vidios on ytube or their own site.

They may or may not sound slightly different, but they're both going to be in the champions league of aural delights!

I may let my GT go later in the year if you're interested and still in the market, I'm not too far from you, I'm down in Plymouth

I have checked out YouTube and it's always hard to gauge with the quality of videos.

@Matt82 - thanks, with the options available I may well still be so I'll keep an eye on the classifieds here.

My all time Hero........................

  1. He co drove the AM DBR1 to Aston's only LM victory in 1959, suffering from a heart condition he failed to disclose. He lived to 89, dying 10th May 2012, having lived with it for most of his life
  2. He convinced Ford against the all the odds that sticking one of their V8's in the ancient AC Ace would blow away the Corvette - and proved them right straight out of the box. The legend of the Cobra was born.
  3. Developed the Cobra into the Daytona Coupe with Peter Brock and did the same to the Ferrari GTO to take the class win at Le Mans for a tiny budget.

He's the reason I've been to Le Mans every year for 33 years and bought a property opposite the Hotel De France - the AM team base in the 50's. All the rooms in the hotel are named after LM winners and his is the one on the 1st floor furthest left in my Avatar. Have stayed in his room several times.

Best of all, I met him at Le Mans several years back when racing my DB4 GT at the 2010 LM Classic. He told me the DBR1 "had a **** gearbox, which is ironic seeing as David Brown's main businesses was tractor and gear making factories". He also told me who he supported in the 24H a couple of weeks previously, saying "its because he has the same helicopter as mine". He told me he flew it most weeks despite being in his 80's.

They say don't meet your heroes for fear of disappointment. He was anything but. He signed the underbonnet of my car, and its one of my most treasured memories. Every time I work on it or race it, I think of the great man. True Legend!

What a brilliant post!! Carroll Shelby what a legend!!!! Yep totally agree, he was the man! Built Ford two Cobras with little or no budget. Proved the Shelby Mustangs and Cobras could work and compete with his performance engines and suspension revisions and boy did they ever!! :p And what a life this man led!!

If both cars are standard 4.7 all day, but soon as you go aftermarket it's very hard to tell the difference.
Mine is only a 4.2 but with the Larini sports cats, x-pipe & back box sounds heavenly, have a listen ;)

Try an H pipe and some Tubis my 4200 sounds deep and barritone and when you step on the gas... snarly not raspy... Loud but not raucous.
I bought a 2002 spyder and only after crawling under it, did I find out it had the full Tubi set up from Cats to chrome tips. Sounds just like you say. Deep bass and plenty of pop on the downshifts. But still not so loud that your neighbors want you to move.

And THAT boys and girls, is why we rarely if ever listen to the ICE! ;)
Wash your mouth out with soap man. "Mine is only a 4.2"?
It's a Maserati Granturismo V8, styled by a design God, with lines that ooze sex appeal and will forever more delight all who set eyes on it, in a world of grey, instantly forgettable boxes on wheels, made by accountants.

Speaking from experience - as I had a 4.2 and decided to fit OEM MC Corsa back box on it 6months later to palliate for the inaudible soundtrack of the 4.2 - I can tell you the car sounded just like the 4.7 MC (and slightly better than regular 4.7S). However, not having a valve system, the loud sound was always on - which wasn’t a problem for me, although could be annoying for a daily driver.
To be honest, I even had bought a valve kit which I never fitted.
What the upgraded exhaust didnt do though, was make up for the actual performance gap to the 4.7... but for everything else, there’s MasterCard ! No wait, what??
