Car you vowed to buy as a lad

Following on from Andy, what was the car that got you into cars and you vowed when you could drive that you would buy but never did?

Basically that moment you knew your life would change forever.

I’ll start, TR7 Sprint in white.

No smirking at the back!

I must have been 10 and used to cycle to see it most days and just stare at the thing, it was so futuristic. I did nearly buy one back in the 90’s but I vowed I would always buy one. This, in my naivety was based on shape and shape alone.

Your turn....

For me it would be a Lotus Europo - I will have one someday, but they are not as beautiful as I remember.

Great question...

When I was 10 yrs old I lived in one of the less affluent bits of Liverpool, and I was determined that eventually I’d own a Capri!

My brother (2 yrs older than me) bought one a few years later and although it was a nice car, that put me off and I never wanted to buy one after that (as he had already had one!)…

Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth.
I’ve not driven one. Not sure I really want to...

Countach.

Very nearly made the dream come true when I met up with Toby Smith (keyboards for Jamiroquai) at his London mews house to buy his yellow LP400. I should add this was many years ago, before prices went silly. But the car needed some work and I chickened out. Big mistake.

Well, when I was growing up they weren’t the £100k garage queens/trailered detailing exhibits they are now. My love came from the racing cars (the Soper/Eggenberger cars in particular), and then the prospect of one day owning a 550bhp RS500 road car that could toast pretty much anything out there. That was the joy of the RS500, what formed the legend in my brain - childish, perhaps naive notions of blasting Testarossas and Countaches in a Sierra. With 550bhp.
Now they’re worth so much the emphasis is on standard cars and the value means that they’re hardly driven in the manner that made them so appealing. Then there’s the drive itself - I also loved the Escort Cosworth and I naively expected something utterly bonkers to drive to match the looks. When in reality, it’s actually a very comfortable machine with a long gearbox throw and more of a cruiser, and needs more power to liberate the fun side.
I have driven a Sapphire Cosworth 2WD and enjoyed it, but I’ve a feeling a standard 224bhp RS500 wouldn’t live up to the dream...

Jaguar Mark 2, but I did buy that when I was 18 with all the money I didn't have. I still have it.

The one that got away was the Hillman Avenger Tiger - and 40 years later I am about to finally put that right. I have the Corgi model (pic below) and in a few weeks I will have the car :)

Very excited. 1973 MK II Tiger in Wardance Red

My old boss had a 4x4 Sapphire Cosworth, very refined and comfortable place to be. In 1996 he swapped it for a nearly new Impreza the performance was on a whole different level. It actually scared me enough that I wouldn’t drive it.

Stevens Lotus Esprit Turbo for me. Was actually in a position to buy one a couple of years ago. Perfect S4 in yellow. Went for a test drive and hated it.
