CC Box: Dropping into Neutral and out whilst moving?

Hi

Just wondered if dropping into neutral when coasting to a stop, was a bad thing? Or if rolling up to say 10mph in Neutral and then selecting a gear was a bad thing.

I don't want to go overboard with how to/how not to drive the CC box. But it's generally how I drive my Manual gearboxed Merc.

Cheers

No it not's bad Rossyl.

I do it all the time in mine - oh and drive in Sport as well!

Good for the clutch - and the ambient noise!

Heavy traffic like the que for the Dartford Tunnel I get as much coasting in as is possible; I hate it when the clutch keeps trying to bite but not quite and you get that 'lurch' from it.... Always in neutral even if I'm only stationary for a couple of seconds. Never 'launch' mine from the line, always get it rolling and then plant the right foot.

Mine had a clutch under warranty at 13k and at 52k the replacement is going strong; just me and my 'owl'....

Yeah, I'm a 'coaster' too. I kind of developed that style myself. Glad the rest do too. Wish I learnt to do it earlier in the clutch's life! That and not using 'Auto'. DOH!

Nah.... See I don't buy this 'Auto is a problem for clutches' argument; If you drive it in manual it will still change down as an auto anyway and if yout hit the limiter going up it will change as well.... eventually! Anyway I tend to be a lazy git the moment I hit slow traffic and drop it back into auto, if I'm driving in a city I find auto is always engaged. I know the previous owner always drove it in auto toill it was warmed up...

I think you do far more damage dithering or racing from a stand still, so I avoid both... At lights I tend to get the jump but not cane it till the clutch has engaged besides which even on Shell Sure Grip you will just upset the MSP in first!

The problem I find with AUTO is it being in the 'wrong gear', my fingers can anticipate what my right foot is going go to do must better than the car can. But hey ho each to their own. Oh and I know about the redline change up, but it get's embarrassing when you accidentally change up twice....duuuuurrrrrrr! Click, WAAHHHHHHHH! lol

I know its a different car but in the brabus i find that auto is a ***** to use, great in traffic but once its free on the road i go through the gears with the paddles, its a semi auto so drops on its own also.....

I agree on the wrong gear part Martin, it could do with a much more responsive kickdown, at best you get 2 gears when it could respond with three and really deliver; on those occasions I do preempt it with a couple of flips of the paddle...

Just on the red line change up...it won't change up if in 'sport' and 'manual'.
In the boot of mine when I bought it was a VHS cassette on how to drive the car with the cambiocorsa gearbox, demonstrated by an ex Ferrari F1 driver, produced by Maserati of course. He went through all the various combinations, sport, auto etc and what the gearbox will and will not do.
Actually worth watching, for a new driver to the cambiocorsa gearbox.

I'll have a go, never uploaded anything to YouTube!
I've copied it to my DVD/HDD player by connecting my VHS player to it, so have it in a digital format now by transferring to a DVD...then into a PC.
It is a bit cheesey, as you can imagine, but certainly worth a watch.
I can see why they made it though, 10 years ago, one of the first flappy paddles, new owner just paid £70k "how do I drive this then?"!!
Never seen the video on eBay or mentioned before, so might be quite rare?
