I liked the XR4X4...With Turbo Technics it must have been a bit mad.

It was, I broke the gearbox in the end... Tbh it was probably on the way out when I got it, which is no doubt why it was for sale in the first place!
I think my mum and dad were quite pleased

There's a blast from the past! I grew up in Northampton and one night my sisters mate came around to pcik her up, her Dad driving. A Minker! Remember them? It was basically a Sierra 4x4 Turbo by Turbo Technics - at the time, probably my favourite car! When I made the comment to my sis, she said "yeah, Alexa's* Dad works on them or something". Turns out Alexa's surname was Kershaw, her Dad being Geoff Kershaw the driving force behing the SAAB Turbos and the founder of Turbo Technics.

*I think her name was Alexa - it was a long time ago!

A Minker.

Not that I was aware.... The name minker doesn't ring any bells and it didn't have the body kit in the picture.
It's difficult to tell from the pic, but it looks like it was based on the later 2.9 version, where as mine was an earlier 2.8. I'm guessing mine was maybe an experimental for runner to that? Either way, I wished I'd known about these minkers back then as would have loved a newer, better version of my one.

A bit from Wikipedia:

Turbocharged versions of the Sierra were also available as post-production models from companies like Janspeed and, most notably, from Turbo Technics. The XR4x4 2.8 was available with a range of aftermarket kits pushing power from 150*PS (110 kW; 148 hp) to over 200*hp (149 kW). The 2.9 got a twin-turbo setup, available with variants up to 280*hp (209 kW). Even the DOHC version got a single turbo kit, of which only a small number were made. Turbo Technics even sold their own pre-prepared Sierra known as the Minker; only a handful were ever produced, as they cost significantly more than Ford's own RS Cosworth.

I think you're right, the earlier ones were not given a specific name. From memory, the Minker was TT kind of saying to Ford "you think thats a Fast Sierra? This is a fast Sierra...."

They did loads of stuff but another favourie of mine was what they did to the big ol' Jag XJ's - I think they were called a Chassuer or something, but basically TT did the engine mods which made a cigar smoking gentlemans car in to a monster of a Q-car. I love that stuff!

My first car was a bog standard Cortina which I immediately applied the go faster Lotus stripes to. The Lotus Cortina was never a fast car by today's standards 0 to 60 in around 9 secs and a top speed of around 115 mph but OMG what an iconic car and such fun to drive.

check this out http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2201809.htm Its yours for the price of a used Granturismo

For those of you not familiar with this car see below...........they will be worth a fortune in years to come
