'Check transmission go to dealer' diagnostic help please.

I'm getting the dreaded 'check transmission go to dealer' message.
In manual mode, won't go above 2nd gear... well it goes into 3rd, then immediately drops back down to 2nd and is not happy at all.

In auto, will go through the gears begrudgingly but fault alarms nearly everytime it changes up for a second or two then clears. No problem downshifting.
No stored codes (other than a couple of front parking sensors)
Have done battery disconnect etc...
Battery is good, 12.7v cold, 14.5v when engine running. Was replaced 12mths ago at sportsitalia. Terminals are tight.
Car is used regularly, but on the c-tek once a week overnight if it has not been used.

2013 (MY14) GranTurismo Sport MC-Shift (gearbox model CFC301) so using the Ferrari 599 301F software on the x431 as that seems to work best.
Launch x431 shows 13v at gearbox.
Have tried various clutch PIS from 3.9 to 4.3 and gearbox relearns, no change. (back at 4.19)
Hyd pressure between 45 and 52 bar.
Clutch actuator pressure 20bar
Clutch wear index 4000, showing 37% worn although on circa 36000miles, so possible clutch territory.
leakage with valves on 10.2cc, leakage with valves off 2.4cc

Think all the above seems good?

Changed an abs / wheel speed sensor 5 weeks and approx 700miles ago and all has been well since. Have checked the live data and all 4 are still reading the same speed when driving.

Any guidance on what to do/check next?

Any other tests, adjustments or info I can get from the Launch x431?

Would a clutch position sensor always throw a code?

Does a worn clutch not throw any codes?
Have had zero clutch slippage and drove perfect on the previous journeys.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Maybe drop it back down to Sportsitalia and get the boys to look at it?

Of course that's an option. But I'd like to see if I can narrow down the fault a bit and possibly even fix it myself If I can. I'm handy on the tools and have the Launch X431 pro mini for diagnosis, just need a bit of guidance from those with more experience on these gearboxes.

If anyone has any advice on what parameters I could maybe monitoring/ logging to narrow this down a bit, that would be great. Without a fault code, and the diagnostic info I posted above I think seemingly being OK (from my online reading) I could be shooting in the dark.

Yes. And the gearbox was removed. Sent away but clear. Wheel Bearing (connection) damaged.

Wow how strange!

Yes this was a particularly difficult one to find.

Disconnect each wheel bearing connector in turn and test for Change in gear function.

Start with the rear ones first.

At least it's an easy thing to eliminate.
Hopefully not the new one I just fitted 5-6weeks ago.

I assume with each one of them disconnected, it wouldn't effect the gearbox function then ? Just the usual abs Xmas tree lights accociated with a faulty one?

Correct. You will get an instant ABS/Active ride/check suspension/go to dealer/park off but if the gearbox then cycles its gears correctly, you have found your issue. Like you say, a simple test to eliminate them.

Did you replace your own wheel bearing and was it OEM ? someone on here recently posted that they had taken a chance on a pattern part, but I can’t remember who ?

Well I never!
Right rear wheel bearing/ABS sensor seems to be the culprit!
No fault codes on any system and all speed sensors showing the same speed when driving, but for some reason preventing the gearbox from changing gear properly ........ Italian electrics! How would anyone diagnose that without hours and hours of trial and error? !

Disconnecting it fixes the gearbox issue, but obviously brings on the ABS/TCS xmas lights etc..

I've tried cleaning the connections but no change. Every time it was disconnected, the gearbox worked, every time it was connected the fault returned.

@conaero So is the problem with the wheel bearing/ Sensor and that needs replacing? or is it it somewhere else along the line?

Thanks @mischaRS and Matt, would have been a wild goose chase without your suggestion.

Yes that was me. But it was the Front right sensor and was throwing all the right codes to tell me so. I actually started there tonight as I assumed as I'd replaced it a few weeks back that would be the issue, but it seems this time to be the rear right!

What's the chances of two going within 700miles of each other ??

They are fragile for sure - good luck with getting things sorted

You just saved yourself a long and expensive process. Yes, the bearing is part damaged you need to swap it out for a new one.

Thanks Matt. :thumb3:

And this is why Forums are so important to enthusiasts like myself.
And more importantly people willing to share their knowledge and experiences with these cars.
This would have taken me many, many more hours /days to diagnose if Mischa and Matt hadn't chimed in.

Its likely that if the average maserati owner had just taken it to a dealer to be looked at, with no fault codes, no other symptoms and 36k miles etc, they would have started by replacing the clutch at £ks.

I will of course, refrain from celebrations until I've replaced the wheel bearing and done several hundred trouble free miles :worried1::lol2:

Yes glad to help and a special mention to MischRS who went through the pain finding out this very difficult problem and expense. I put my Strad gearbox in his car at one point.
Out of interest, was it the right rear on his too?
Wondering, if the TCU uses that one in particular for a reference.

All very strange regardless.
