love Salzburg brother got married there did a 3 week summer driving holiday then, now that was a long time ago. did a Christmas in 1988 day after the Lockerbie flight with US servicemen going to Munich not a very good flight, but we did a quick visit to Oberndorf for the Silent Night chapel, then over to Werfen to see the castle. really enjoyed Christmas eve lots of dark beer and currywurst, carols and snow.

Berlin is great. 5 or 6 markets and it's a good social event with lots of drinking and eating. Loads of other stuff to see including classic car barn - Remise. Cheap to get to and stay in. Other recommendation is nurnberg. Old Town is magical at Christmas.

Salzburg will be lovely for Xmas.

I've spent a few in Hamburg, which is fun, and one in Bavaria on the edge of the German Alps, which was very mellow. Will be in Austria also this coming Xmas (Innsbruck).

Too commercialised. Christmas now starts in October and the spending frenzy ratchets up until the end of December. Sh!t weather, sh!t lights, sh!t music, heaving crowds, what's not to like? Roll on January.

Agree, they're commercialized, but Christmas is so beautiful. Why not living in a fairy tale for a while?

Totally. You can make it as commercial or not. I am *very* happy to be away from the retail industry this year. There will be a tree, and mulled cider. The pudding and cake have been made and are gently absorbing brandy. Dinner will be wonderful and much family will be around.

What's not to like?
