I went down via France, and back via the above countries, great fun, just watch for pot holes on Belgian roads, they seemed worse than here!

Some of the Belgian motorways are dire. Probably the worst in Western Europe. Particularly the E42 just over the border near Lille. Things improve as you get nearer Luxembourg.

The E42 was awful as was the Brussels ring road motorway. Made the M25 feel like fun.

You just reminded me of this. It was taken on the road from Eupen to Monschau. As soon as you reach the German border it's like someone flicked a switch. The change in road conditions is that dramatic.

As we are in Newcastle it makes sense to take the ferry to Amsterdam and start from there - saves the Chunnel and northern France and means more autobahn.....
