Thanks now £184 poorer :)

So the next thing is that I usually use Autoglym for the wash, is this OK or should I use something else and where is the best place for drying cloths and masking tape.

Finally what wax?

Thanks.

I bought a cheap Silverline DA off eBay. I used the polishing heads that came with it with a G3 compound and was very underwealmed. I them went and bought 3M heads and mops plus 3M fast cut (green) mid cut (yellow) and Ultrafina (blue) and the difference is night and day. It cost me twice what the DA cost but the results are excellent. Make sure you only use the compounds on their own mop heads and don't mix them up. The compounds are what is known as 'diminishing' which means as you use them they break down finer and finer. Wet the mop heads and forget the Fastcut, just use yellows and finish with blue. Work in a vertical then horizontal matrix until the polish disappears.

Mask everything up as the polish flings everehwere

You get a roll of yellow low tack masking tape in the kit Jkulin.

To wash the car i use a snow foam pre wash and then Meguires gold car wash. Halfords have got a 3 for 2 offer on cleaning products at the moment so you can pick up a gallon and a wash mitt and clay mitt for almost 1/3 off.

Once you have washed the car you will also either need to clay bar or clay mitt the car to remove any bonded contaminents. The fareclay mitt linked below is good for the money and means you only have to clay bar any real stubborn areas.

http://www.halfords.com/motoring/ca...iling-products/farecla-g3-body-prep-clay-mitt

I'm not a million miles away from you so i'm more than happy to come and get you started if you like. The pre wash, wash and clay mitt / bar are important stages. You need to get the car as clean as possible and tar / dirt free.

i'm happy to get you as far as the stage 1 or 2 polishing stages. 2 and 3 are just a repeat of stage 1 with a finer compound or i can write up a how to do guide for you based on your kit.

The thread i started below is using the kit you bought. I can flesh out the exact methods used in a how to guide in detail if you need it but i'm happy to come down to south staffs and show you / guide if you prefer. You can never have enough micro fibre clothes either :)

Wax choice ? you will get a hundred different answers now :)

its easier to decide how much you want to spend on the wax or glaze and then we can try and guide you from there. You can pay anything from £25 for a decent basic easy to apply product like farecla G3. which is an easy on easy off product and a big tub for the money.

Hybrid wax / sealants are around the £35 but it only a small tub.

You have then got Swissvax and the like at around £65 for the baseline product.

You have then got the super waxes at £100's per tub. Not really worth the bang for buck in my opinion.

Cheers Matt, what do you use as a final finish to seal it in?

I use Autoglym Super Resin (red) then Harley's to seal. Finish with Demon Shine.

Stunning every time :)

The Autoglym Super resin is a bit old school but most waxes these days do not contain abrasives which makes the AG so good to revisit.

Just watch the chalkiness of it, it can get a bit messy on the plastics.

Cheers Kenny, that sounds like a plan, I'll start gathering all the kit and then give you a shout, then let me know what your poison is :) I'm about 3 miles from J12 of the M6

Where's the best place for Micro fibre cloths?

I've used the red many times before and although always pleased, it doesn't last long though.

No Poison required. I'm happy to help a fellow forum member. MF clothes you get a couple with the kit but you can usually get them on offer at Costco or Amazon in bundles of 10, 20 or 30 and if i recall MAF on the forum had some bundles if he still has some left for a reasonable price.

If you have the room and there are any other forum member nearby that want an introduction to detailing then i'm sure we could do a couple of cars at once if the weather is in our favour.

it isn't a quick process but it is rewarding as each stage reveals your progress. I can bring down my travelling kit as well so if your missing anything then i'm sure i will have it with me.

Bought a meguires kit a few months ago and attacked the porker with it. Was amazed by the results. Once you are brave enough to start using a DA polisher and seeing the results you wonder why you would pay for someone else to do it or attempt paint correction by hand. It really works wonders and lasts.

Great Idea Kenny, I can move the cars off the drive and we can get three on at a time if anyone wants to come down as well.

I'll give Mark (MAF) a shout and see if he has any bundles left.
