Downshifting

Sometimes I would downshift from 2.5-3k rev in higher gear. The caar naturally jolts to match the ratio of the below gear, will this cause gearbox harm as I recall Maserati dealer saying that the gearbox wont change if it doesn't think it's able or safe to do so?

I just love the downshift, especially 2nd to 1st.

I never downshift from 2nd to 1st. The rationale is that in a normal manual car I wouldn't either whilst on the move. It is a too low ratio for it to be changing to. 1st gear should only be engaged when pulling off from a standing start.

That is what I think anyway.

Likewise I never change from 2nd into 1st. Always let the car come to a standstill

I am guilty of this but now come to think of it I wouldn't do it in a normal car or my van.

I certainly won't do this either. Was very firmly told off once. :)

Enough of that. Shifting down. Roadcraft teaches 'Gears to go, brakes to slow' Personally I brake and the block shift to match the engine speed. Unless I want to hear lots of crackles and snarls :D

Personally, I never select first gear in any vehicle unless stationary, and definitely NOT in a Maserati!!! :-0

I do change down from 2nd to 1st.

For example when rolling slowly almost to stop at a roundabout: if a gap appears the choice is either let the car halt and eventually put itself into 1st, by which time the gap will certainly have gone and the car behind will probably have rear-ended you for not using the gap; or, to exploit the gap, feeding in the power will cause massive clutch-slipping in 2nd.

In such cases I tell the car we need to be in 1st.

In a conventional manual I wouldn't be changing down into 1st because reading the traffic correctly normally allows you to let it trickle forwards in 2nd without slipping the clutch. You can't do this in a Duo-Select as it will slip it.

right, all good points, personally never treated 1st any different to any other gear. I do believe in using the downshifts as a matter of occasional usage.

I'll cut back on intentional downshifting but that noise :p
