Drivers Side Window cracking noise when operating

Hi
My drivers side window suddenly stopped dropping automatically and on winding down and up it makes a horrible banging when reaching the maximum elevation and lowering. Not sure if it’s a regulator or a micro switch so would be grateful for some pointers? Many thanks.

Sounds like regulator to me

If it’s making a cracking noise it’s probably one of the cables on the regulator getting chewed up in the plastic housing that the motor attaches to. Don’t use it until you investigate or you’ll f@#k it right up.

Happened to my spyder too last year which meant the roof wouldn't open - so the car was grounded. And if it doesn't drop to clear the seals when opening/closing the door a trick I picked up from SI was to gently push on the window

Don't know about other models, but a 3200 and 4200 do not have cables for the windows. It's a stamped steel scissor mechanism with an arced part with teeth driven by the motor.

Crackling sounds can also be caused by dried out window mechanism grease on the rubbers or the mechanism (difficult to interpret "cracking sound" by written text). The white grease used to lube the mechanism tends to harden over time to where it get's hard or goo-like. It bogs down the movement of the mechanism and mine sounded like juttering/cracking. of the window as it moved especially at the extremes where the grease had accumulated into clumps.

If it sounds metal on metal, like a wrong gear shift, most likely the teeth on the arc are stripped. It's not to difficult to get the door cards off and have a look. Taking the mechanism out of the door for a good clean and lube is also doable if a bit mechanically enclined. As with everything Italian, look for bolts and scews in ilogical places and mark the screws and it's location cause the're 10+ different types of fasteners holding the leather in place (must of been some sort of garage sale at the local hardware store when assembling this car:rolleyes::rolleyes:)
