Yes Dem,
With a wet sump, all the oil collects in the sump...
so you should check it once the oil has cooled down and drained back into the sump,
that way the level on the dipstick will be correct.

On a dry sump, the oil should be checked with the engine hot and and whilst running,
Regards,
Enzo.

so should i start her up for a few mins then check it or just cold??

Cold...
If you start her up, the oil will be pumped round the engine and you will have to wait for it to cool down again and drain back into the sump,
Regards,
Enzo.

Strange how checking the oil varies from car to car. My Gallardo has a dry sump, yet you check it with the engine off. You have to go through a strange procedure.

Before turning the engine off, you raise the revs to 2000 RPM for 45 seconds, then turn off the engine and check the oil within 1 minute.

i hear from good sources that some dealers use shell helix and this has been linked to many problems with the maserati engines.....always stick to selenia.....

I always use shell helix ultra, (5W 40 from memory)...
it's what it says in the manual...Main dealers HR Owen and Lancasters also use this for my type of engine,
and so do independants like Grimaldis...I won't be changing unless there is some documented proof somewhere,
anything tangible Dem?

well it was rob grimaldi that told me that the shell helix is to blame for the 3200 problems.....selenia is always used by him he said.....

that's interesting about the Gallardo engine;

I can only think that is supposed to be a generic low stress "good rev" to pump as much oil as possible over the cams, so you can then check what's left in reserve. Does seem very technical though...!

I was looking at an Alfa 147 JTD last week that came up "ENGINE OIL LEVEL" and momentarily showed a bar graph on the display between revs and speed when it was initially started. I thought; "I wonder if you could trust that...?"

Jim, I have a GT JTD (same as 147) and yes, when you start up you get the oil level sensor and so far, its been spot on, as when you start say a minute after switching her off, it shows half way, as the oil is dripping back down.

really- that's incredible!

Well, not really I suppose given the hidden technology elsewhere in the car, but that really impresses me- most dip sticks show a transient "measurement" area over a 1 litre section; the JTD must be electronically measuring over a much shallower depth which would give a decent early warning I would think...
