Edinburgh daily commute

I've worked and stayed in Edi before, but now I'm thinking of moving there. Any local forum members know the best places to look within daily commute - car or train, as I'd like to get out of the city after living in London for so long.

Firstly let me say i have never done a daily commute into Edinburgh, but lived in the central belt all my younger life. As a general observation i think like most UK cities the Edinburgh traffic around commuting time it awful. There are several good train services, including the infamous trams running from the airport now. I would be thinking of some where on the train lines? I have done the Edinburgh festival a couple of times and stayed in Fife and got the train into Edinburgh and certainly for the festival and city centre it was excellent, with trains sort of 15-20 minutes no problems. Of course if you are going to commute in the Maserati, then you may want to live in Creif or kirriemuir so you have to travel a long way every day :)

agree with Davey, driving/parking in edinburgh is a nightmare. if it was me (and being an ex glasgow boy, it never will be!) I would look to prestonpans/tranent way and again, use the train - added bonus with this option is that PK supercars are there ;)

Why Edinburgh? It's pretty to look at and compact to walk round but Glasgow is where it's at. 3 times the size, 3 times the personality.

As a Glaswegian, I am trained to diss Edinburgh at any opportunity. :)

Have to agree with Outrun.

Glasgow every time and only 50 mins by train to Edinburgh

I've lived and worked around Edinburgh for the last 18 years so know the area pretty well. As others have said, driving and parking in Edinburgh during rush hour is awful but no worse (and actually probably better) than places in the south of England. Do you know where in the city you'll be working? That can make a big difference to where you live if you want to reduce commuting time/hassle.
You say you want to get out of the city of London but to what extreme? I live in a rural location where the nearest street light and pavement is 3 miles away but can meet friends in the centre of Edinburgh 20 miles away with only 30 minutes driving. It can take 3 times that during rush hour.
If you let me know what you are looking for I can give you advice on where to look and where to avoid. Send me a PM and I'll give you a ring to discuss if you wish.

Did you find somewhere? I commute everyday in and out of Edinburgh. City driving is murder but my 25 minutes on the Lang Whang is great fun, although I've not done it in the Maserati yet. As a scouser who's been living in Scotland since the 70's, Glasgow does have some nice places, but home is where the heart is and I live right between both Edinburgh and Glasgow so have the best of both worlds.
