Exotic Car Protocol and Etiquette

Interesting post a while back on Ferrari Chat about approaching exotic car owners in public.
If you see an interesting car while out and about ( covid not withstanding), do you stop to chat with the owner?
If you are approached while in your car, do you make time to chat, or do you blow that person off?
Do you chaps have a secret handshake or something to let others know you are a member of the Italian car fraternity?

Stop and chat. I have even let young lads sit in drivers seat at Shelsley in the past. It is great to hear 'Wow look dad its a Maserati' They get a chance to dream like we did and get a photo for mum.

Had an older chap stop me once. He declined when I said he could sit in as, with his canes, he didn't think he could get out again, bless

Had a couple of chaps stop for a chat outside my house before Xmas. “Nice car mate”, they were scruffy looking, local accents, my immediate thought was that their other mates were burgling me whilst I was distracted! An hour later we were still discussing cars and engineering, “oh you had Cerbera, flat plane crank, early ones had lively cams, speed six that followed had the issue with the sub standard lifters didn’t it?” “Ah you had an RS Turbo, metering units were a pain on them, rubbish brakes cos they were designed for left hand drive and the servos were the opposite side to the pedal, they had to use bars and linkages!”.
Two of the most knowledgeable car enthusiasts I’ve ever spoken to, with a broad range of exotic and old skool cars.
I always like to chat to people interested in cars!

I think it was the second Brunti a couple of guys from JLR down the road had driven past the hotel, turned around and come back. Must have spent about 2 hours with us in the car park :)

Took the GT to the dump once. Had a fantastic pastor knocking on the window asking what it was :)

I am always happy for people to approach me and chat, be them fellow owners or admirers, had lots of people photographed in or next to various cars.

I will approach fellow owners of the situation allows, you soon get to know who want to chat and who doesn’t.

Still waiting for some gorgeous leggy blonde to come an admire the Maserati and ask me to take her for the ride of her life ;)

One of the best things from my first Le Mans trip was being in the car park from our first stop over the next morning.
There was a guy taking his son to school and he saw me loading my car and he said in perfect English (He was about 12). “Maserati, beautiful cars”.

So I started her up, sat him in the drivers seat and let him rev the sh*t out of her.
He only went to 6-7,000 revs but I think I made a young mans year. And made his dad very jealous.

These cars are made to be shared. Not to be hidden away for the rich and famous.

If you have a nice car, share it with those who appreciate them.

I’ll always chat, a couple of occasions in our local Costco I’ve let some young lads sit in it. Similar to above I’ve also taken the son of our local seamstress around the block in sports mode whilst he filmed, then let him sit in drivers seat and Rev it. He was sending the video to all his mates as we drove off. Always glad to share with anyone who’s interested.
What was the consensus on the Ferrari forum?

I too, am happy to chat with admirers, I usually ask " you like cars? what have you got?", and then the conversation starts.
I also agree that we are fortunate to be owners of these fine machines, and to some extent are ambassadors for the brand. The reason I asked
the question was that a few months ago, a Ghibli went by us in town, I tapped the horn and gave the guy a thumbs up. At the next light, he pulled up beside and put his window down and we chatted. My wife was at first taken aback, but as we drove off she said "you're right, Maserati people are different".
The consensus on the other site though was a bit different, many people didn't want to be bothered by strangers.

I'm always happy to chat to folk and pre-Covid let them sit for pics etc. Kids who can reach it love to have a stab of the loud pedal.

Why doesn't that surprise me! as has been said before, Ferrari drivers are seen as flash gits, whereas Maserati drivers are seen as class :lol2:Always happy to chat to people, was washing it the other day and a couple of walkers stopped for a chat.

I too am always happy to chat - espec if it's a good looking chap! - tho' they often prefer to talk to Mr RR - well at least they get more technical sense out of him!

I have always had nothing but positive reactions to the Maserati. The DB9 however gets nothing but hatred. Driving up my road I had some old guy with his wife do some strange wrist behaviour and spit on the bonnet. Usually I would put it down to the green eyed monster but I had my 4 year old Daughter in the car who then asked why that old man was so angry and what the certain wrist movement meant! “Ask your Mother”.
