Fault code 1554 (4200/GS)

I've been having a bit of a snag (1554) which has been bringing up a CEL. Apparently, this code relates to the cam vario potentiometer on one of the heads. I had one last year on the left bank and I've just had one on the right. If you get this fault code there is an easy fix. Take off the appropriate black cover (the one on the rocker box cover with Maserati on it) and under it you will see all the injector wires. Under those wires is a black plastic connector. Pull it apart and, likely as not, you will find oil in it. This has either come past the seal where the actuator goes into the rocker box, or has leached up the wires. Flush the connector out with either brake cleaner or motorbike chain cleaner and reassemble. If you have got an android phone, there is an app called TORQUE and, if you get a Bluetooth OBD2 reader for £20 off e-bay, you can cancel the CEL. I did that very thing and all is well. I've just panned the cr4p out of it for 25 miles across country and the CEL remains unlit.

Update; I took her out of the garage for a wash and brush up and the CEL came back on. Bugger! Took the connector apart again and it looked dry. Double bugger! I had a thought and took the connector apart on the other bank; connector was loose and full of oil. Connector cleaned and put back together and the CEL is out. This could be a problem to look out for in the future. A main dealer might just change the vario potentiometer and the labour to take the rocker box off, plus the parts, could run into hundreds of pounds. Bear this thread in mind if you get a 1554 fault.

I use the Torque app I mentioned. If you are connected to the Internet you can find what each code means and you can cancel some of them. It's one of the main reasons I got rid of my I-phone and went Android.

Thanks for this info BennyD. I have been trying to get rid of a P1554 code for about 6 months. Today I removed the covers and checked the connectors you mentioned. Both were full of oil and the passenger side was a little loose. I have cleaned them and put them back together. I took her for a quick spin and no more CEL. I'll see how it goes over the next few weeks, but at this stage looking good. Thanks..

No worries Rich. That's the beauty of a forum like this. Happy motoring, it's much nicer without that little yellow light on!

I've got an i-pad so I don't need an i-phone and I much prefer the S2 to my old i-phone. It's got a bigger, clearer screen and I find it's better for browsing on the move. Horses for courses.

Hum, wouldn't ever buy Samsung, they are imitators, not innovators, they just blatantly rob what they want and thats why they are always in court.

Reminds me of the Chinese Top Gear episode where they rob all the styling from the European cars.

Android is OK though, its just Samsung I have a problem with.

I do see your reasons for moving from iPhone, Apple need to catch up, lets see what the iPhone 5 coming in 2 months is like. (probably the same as the new Samsung coming 4 months later ;-) )
