Finally got my GTS - and comparison with the Sport Model

Hi boys,

Need some of your expertise opinion and advice again!

It has been almost 2 months since I posted my original questions about buying a GTS.

Well, I only took delivery of my 2009 GTS (Grigio Granito) on Saturday, yes it took 2 months to complete the purchase, some of you could have bought a GT and traded it in for a Stradale all in 2 months!

Anyway, the upside of this delay was that I had a Gran Cabrio Sport (in white) during this time. I can now summarise the differences: (both are automatic)

1. The Sport model, although has 10 extra HP, did not feel faster at all compares to the GTS automatic

2. It certainly sounds so much better compared to the GTS Auto, none of the non sense logic of opening the valve only at 3000+ rpm. It is just loud as soon as the spots button is activated.

3. Oh the noise on sport mode, especially with the roof down is simply intoxicating ! It was great to be able to enjoy the noise without exceeding any speed limit!

4. The boot is pretty much non existent, it could just about fit a 10 kg BBQ charcoals, and that was with a bit of force as well!

5. Air conditioner on the Gran Cabrio was not very effective during the last 2 weeks, I had it on full blast and still could not get it cool enough inside the car. You guys had any problem with air conditioning in yours?

6. Do you know that Gran Cabrio has a very different boot? I bought the carbon fibre lip spoiler from Noor (yes the spoiler arrived over 1 month before my car turned up). The boot on the Cabrio has a different shape, even the curvature is different compared to the GTS. By the way, I love the look of the carbon fibre spoiler, makes the car look more exotic, and more italian :)

7. The noise !

Now a few questions please.

1. I am so impressed and addicted to the noise and I do not want the enjoyment to be restricted at 3000+ rpm (unlike you lucky MC owners), so I have also bought the mini kit from Noor (yes, already a frequent shopper at Performance Italia before I actually had my car). I am going to take it to SMDG to have it installed. Has anyone had this done? How long would it take ?

2. The daytime running light on the sport model looks great, I am looking at replacing the standard park(or position) light, anyone done this before? How do you get to the light bulb? Just need to remove the engine cover? What sort of light bulb do I need? I just want to get rid of the yellowish coloured position light.

3. If I could get the mini kit to work, does it mean that I will be able to get the same exhaust note compared to the MC shift? If so, it will be the best of both world because I simply love the noise on the MC shift, but automatic works better for me. Not sure if opening the valve means GTS Auto would sound exactly the same as the GTS MC shift. Well, my car does sound quite similar to the Sport at above 3000+ rpm, not sure how it would compare to the MC shift.

Any other worthwhile mod? I found the gap between the rear tyres and the arch a bit big, but don't think I want to lower the car - simply asking for trouble driving over London speed bumps.

My car comes with a 12 months maserati warranty plus another 12 months warrantywise warranty. Ok. The maserati warranty must be great, how is the warranty from warrantywise?

Tanks for your advice !

Many congratulations Slay, lovely colour although we need to see pics!!
Interesting comments on the Gran Cabrio, never tried one myself but noticed the boot at a motor show and it was tiny!
Wouldn't think you'd notice the extra 10hp. 2012 models came with 450hp and I couldn't tell the difference from a 440hp 2011 model.

I thought the exhaust system on the Auto is slightly different to the MC shift, certainly when I saw naked chassis at the factory they were, not sure how this would affect the sound after Noor's kit has been fitted.

The new lights on the 2013 models are an improvement, the orange markers do look a bit old fashioned. I was told these are sealed units so the only way is to change the whole light. Their was a thread on the other Masser forum from someone supplying new 2013 lights in black or grey I think, genuine units apparently.

Ride height can look a little high, perhaps some lowered springs or look out for the genuine MC Set up kit, which lowers by 10mm. When mine was parked next to Dhanj's nephews car, Ajay's red GTS you could tell the difference.

You'll enjoy it anyway, truly an amazing and emotional car that sounds like no other. Well done again
Cheers Blu

Firstly, gratz on the GTS! You'll love it!

I have also recently bought a GTS 2009 AUTO and had the same requirements with the exhaust. I was close to buying an mc shift just for the exhaust!
In the end, I bought the mini-kit of Noor and fitted it myself. Well, in truth, my old man gave me a hand as he's fairly handy when it comes to things like this.
It took us about 1-1.5 hours and most of it was working out where it connects and how to wire it. We did it on axel stands, would have been far quicker with a pit!! I'd say it should take no more than 30 mins for a professional installer.

Regarding the finished product...you won't be disappointed!! I haven't heard it side by side against the mc shift but it is every bit as load in my opinion. You get all gurgles and so on you will have heard with your gran cab on sports. I'm not exaggerating when I say I find it a real challenge to put on the stereo and rather than simply listening to the roar!!

Hope this helps!

Enjoy your car. Bear in mind that the GranCabrio is c110kg heavier than the GranTurismo. Therefore it needs c15 bhp extra just to have the same power to weight as the coupe.

Lots of mods for these cars and lots of chat/photos on maseratilife.com about it. Personally I like my car as it is as I like being able to cruise in Sport with the valves closed. I also sometimes overtake people below 3000 revs as the car is so loud with the valves are open that it might **** a few people off.

Hi PJC,

thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Mini kit, great to know!!

For me, I do prefer the silky smooth gear shift on the automatic, but it was hard not to like the exhaust note of the MC!

I have already bought the mini kit and the rear lip spoiler from Noor, I have no one to help me unfortunately, so I will be taking the car to SDMG to have it installed. Good to know that it is a relatively straight forward job to have it installed.

Can't wait to have it installed, so that I don't have to try and keep the RPM at 3000+ just to hear the car roars !

Cheers.

I totally agree, nice to be able to cruise in 'stealth' mode, very useful when driving home late. I think the noise is wonderful during the day, most people would probably appreciate, but a bit anti social driving with sports mode on late at night, especially in a residential area.

The mini kit will be perfect, being able to switch the sound on and off regardless of suspension setting.

Mini kit appeals to me but my understanding is that it is only on and off whereas I would like to offer a stock (ie open >3k revs) option as well. The noise when the valves close when you change up is actually quite nice!

Currently in the south of France, 34 degrees everyday (sounds great but is pissing me off, yeah I'm ungrateful) and the air con is rubbish! It's not even as though it's a dark car. If it's not on Lo and making a racket it's barely worth having on.

Sounds like the air cond is a general weakness of the GT then... I found th air conditioning inadequate (on the brand new 2013 sport) during the heat wave. I have not tested the air conditioning out in my 2009 GTS yet, but sounds like it would not be any more effective than the sport.

So I guess there is no need to ask the dealer to look into it then.

Strange, I found the aircon in the 4200 to be more than adequate. Although I am a lizard.

Odd... mine seems fine. My wife's a lizard but I prefer to be cooler and the GT's aircon seems able to cope pretty well in the heat. I'd get it checked.

It comes out the holes cold but just doesn't keep me cold enough. More penguin than lizard.

Might sound odd but have you tried also turning on the aircon in the back? Strikes me that otherwise the front half of the car is fighting a battle with the back half.

Yeah, all that's on, so to speak, vents in the back, recirculation etc. Thinking about it, I suppose I'm not too bad, just the seat that needs cooling.
