Full auto QP5 variator needs replacing for 2nd time

Well here’s an unexpected problem on my 2007 QP. Variators replaced st 37k. Variator solenoids replaced at 48k. Now I’m on 80k one side needs replacing again. Might just be solenoid but tbh once stripped down its not worth the man hours risk not to change the variator as well.

So, are we to believe that variators only last about 40k miles? Or have I just been unlucky? The car had the ‘improved and uprated’ non return valves fitted.

Anyone had similar experiences?

the bulk of cars needing variatiors replaced are between 30-45k miles. I guess this could be bad luck on your part however the mileage corresponds to a lifetime of these particular parts!

Rather concerning

What was done originally? Replacement variators, solenoids and the bearing caps machined?

My 2008 MC-Shift also had this work done twice, by Giallo both times. I don't know what work was carried out each time as it was before my ownership and the invoices were a little vague. I believe on one occasion, it was carried out as a part of the Nuvola warranty scheme as it occurred during the first year of a previous keeper's ownership.
I'm sorry to hear that though & I feel for you

My gut feeling would be the solenoid and its only the rocker cover off to do that.
Although I appreciate that's still a bit of work but no where as near as getting the whole front off.
Keep us posted.

Totally agree but as with most things these days quality not what it was and components not serviceable anymore.

My question is really whether this should be a serviceable item or a fit-for-life item?

Maserati now offer a QP with 3 yrs or 100k miles free servicing. They’d replace these 3 times in that case. That’s ****.

The solenoid should be fit for a long service life in my opinion the same as say a wiper motor and many other items too.
