Hi Dem

Seen this. Good programme. Crazy days of unsafe racing when men were men and cars were evolving on the track. Seatbelts and roll bars came far too late. Credit to JS for pushing safety measures.
Some of the crashes were horrible. Drivers burning alive trapped because of poor standards and few Marshalls around the tracks. Now you can't fart without an exstiguisher being nearby. That's progress.

Regards
Paul

Just finished watching it now, a very very good programme....with a massive dose of sadness.

They mention that in 1976 there were no deaths in F1, but for me, the worst accident happened for me in 1977 at Kyalami and the death of Tom Pryce, dont watch if you are easily disturbed and certainly nobody under 18 should see this!

What happened is a driver pulled over and caught fire. 2 marshall ran across the circuit both carrying fire extinguishers, the first made it but a young 19 year old boy was struck by Tom Pryce's car and sent him cartwheeling like a rag. In turn upon stricking the boy, Pryce was hit in the face with the fire extinguisher and killed instantly. Pryce's car then continued down the straight, smashing into another car and then hitting the barrier.

All this was broadcasted on live TV. This shoes just how far we have come and along with Jackie Stewart, Michael Schumaker should also be commended as he was instrumental in the safety of the modern F1 car.

In those days people mainly went to see the accidents. I was a bit like that myself when I went to watch touring cars in the 80s and 90s, but they almost always walked away unharmed. I would not like to see a bad injury/fatal accident.

They all have Jackie Stewart to thank for being so steadfast with regard to improving safety. He is a great man as well as a first class driver.

Thought they said "he was a pious scot with beady eyes"

How anybody got away with things is beyond belief - Graham Hill turning up at a hospital with 2 broken legs and it was shut!, the guy who fell out of his car as it somersaulted because he was not wearing a seatbelt - mind you he got up and walked away!

The FIA as it was back then saw him as aspanner in the works but most of the drivers supported him and Rint.
