..... because there wasn't any. It was accepted by most of the drivers of that era, if you drove fast you might get killed and if you did...well, tough. It's much the same at the TT today. However, no one makes them do it and those that do go back every year because they love doing it. Even some of those crippled in TT accidents go back in wheelchairs and help out in the pits because that's what they do. As has been said before; for those that understand, no explanation is needed. For those that don't understand, no explanation is possible.

As a CH manager in a BSB team in a past life I have to say " no one makes them do it is not the full story".
A rider can make three years money with a top three finish at the TT the big names can make fortunes. Manufactures could not give a **** for the riders as I have personally witnessed on more that one occasion.
The incentives for riders are so large that they lose sight of just how risky it is. Lads like Guy Martin Adrian Archibald and John Mc love the risk and so keep pushing it just like Dave J but the odds get worse the longer they ride DJ is a case in point.
The only person rider I have seen stand up to the big firms is Jim Moody I witnessed him tell Castrol Honda & Baba Snan (HRC MD) to stick it up their ***! LOL due to a dubious bit of kit that Honda said was fine, NOT.
Leaving teams to deal with the aftermath of a fatal incident including introducing parents to the coroner!
The TT made me give up BSB made me feel sick.
