Update - the final chapter.
Part of the overall deal when I bought the Larinis from Noor at Torenno Performance was a ECU remap to make the most of the improved breathing (I also had a BMC air filter fitted at the same time). I met Noor at his tuning centre near Stratford on Avon and the team set to work. The ECU was removed and taken away to a secret place to have some magic applied. Apparently it's not a complicated ECU and only has about 16 maps compared to the 400+ of some more modern machinery! After about an hour of wizardry I heard the familiar sound of my car starting up. I then heard it drive off so had to go and listen as I've never heard anyone else driving her. I now know what everyone has heard and is talking about! It sounds absolutely awesome, a real rumble and growl with spitting, popping and crackling. IMO it sounds like it should!
I was then asked to test drive the car. The difference is noticeable - more grunt low down, but smoother throughout the rev range and startling at higher revs/certain speeds where it just pushes towards the horizon like something possessed. I was told off for running it on 95 octane unleaded, where the lower octane is affecting the performance of the car and dropping power. I'd never noticed any difference running it on 95, but will only run it on super unleaded from now on as that's what the car has been mapped to.
A 100 mile drive home produced lots of smiles from inside and outside the car. I love it and am delighted with the changes I've made. It's cost a lot of cash, but the main original motivation was to get rid of the old cats before they broke up and ruined my engine. That job is done and the side-effects produced of increased noise and power only add to the overall experience. I'm delighted.
A huge thank you to Noor from Torenno Performance. A thoroughly decent guy to deal with and a true Maserati enthusiast. You can buy his stuff here:
