I've taken the 19's off my GS and put 18's off a 4200 on mine.
I'm loving the comfort gained.

19 inchers on the GS was I am sure purely for marketing reasons.
I recall many a road test on the current BMW M3 at the same time reporting that 18" wheels gave a much better ride and handling compared to the optional 19" wheels... that also suffered from crack rims like the GS.
Heck the Trofeo 4200 ran 18" wheels and that was for track only!

18's are the way forwards for us Race Boys then Mike.
Glad I have two sets for mine down here :)

I got a set too, they look great and are not made out of biscuits like the original GS wheels, my avatar shows the car on 18s.

Of course you can always stick to the more sensible 18" but go with the Formula Dynamics Veloce Corsa/Forgestar F14 wheels!

I found some satin black concave wheels to emphasis rear width that ended up quite flush with guards I like them
