Granturismo 4.2 2008 Oil Control Unit Failure

Hi, I have found some old threads with unidentified clattering noises (normally thought to be variatiors) and in some cases strange cup shaped metal pieces in the sump. I had been living with what I thought was intermittent variator clattering noises on start up and installed an Accusump to pre-lube the variatiors but this did not seem to stop the noise. I recently had the sump removed to replace a leaking oil pressure sensor switch and discovered mangled metal and plastic pieces in the sump. You can imagine the feeling of dread as we removed the front timing chain cover! Thankfully? the fault was found to be the oil pump control unit (situated at the base of the motor) that had shattered the tensioners and parts of the chain bracket guide - there were also cup shaped metal tensioner guides resembling piston rod connecting bearings. The replacement part (223267) comes as a complete unit and cost 231 GBP from Scuderiaparts (UK). Hope this helps for all those who find similar signs of a “problem“ although the engine still runs perfectly.

Sounds like a lucky escape.

Hello, and thank you for sharing.
I have perhaps similar issue; during cold start can hear like almost ”tapping, rattling“ noise from sump area. First I thought that cats are failing, but listening with stethoscope is clear noise is there.
my question is, how difficult was to replace oil control unit.
thank you in advance.

Check with your scope in the middle of the timing case, the chain guide snap off

I understand, thank you. In my case could be only failing pump as noise disappears with temperature rising to operating levels. I am planing to do remove and inspect pump for clearances , following will share it on your forum. Any suggestions before this is done …
thank you

Hi all, I got details about this 2015 GT that I recently got.
this engine had pre-existing condition, apparently for one or another reason the fuel rails cap spacer got into engine. Now I must deal with this. Curently when cold car make that rattling noise , using stethoscope listening it is coming from just from the area where sump pump is, not from the pan and not from the block. I would assume this peace got now into upper sump area and it bouncing around, most noticeable during cold start, diminishing when oil is hot. Did anyone had similar issue, please let me know. Thank you in advance
