GranTurismo S Space Saver Spare

I know that they are hellishly expensive, but does anyone here actually have one for their GTS?

There seem to be a couple of spares available for a GT, a 17" and an 18" so I am guessing that for the GTS with the 20" wheels and the bigger brakes, you would need the 18" spare due to the clearance needed but can anyone please confirm this?

Cheers

That can be a long wait if you only need to shift the car a mile or so, or to get it somewhere safer than a main road.

Indeed but hiking boots take up less room in the boot.

I read recently that the Khamsin had a full size spare under the bonnet... bearing in mind in the GT theres room for a 2nd V8 under there......

Fear of a puncture is always at the back of my mind on long trips - esp when time is short..I'd never be tempted to use the gunk supplied ... waiting for a lorry and a spare would be a nail biter..

It's true, there's plenty of room under there.

I prefer the idea of a spare wheel over some foam & a compressor or waiting for RAC, but it's an expensive item to have rattling around in your boot. That said, it's the route that I will be looking to go down

Of course, because it's from the days when all cars came with full-sized spares.

Me too.

I don't use my car as a daily driver, it is for special trips; trips where I'm often rushing to meet a car ferry booking, family and luggage on board.

Not enough room, is my view. I have a can of repair squirt, a repair kit and a compressor. Between them I reckon all but the most terminal of tyre troubles can be patched up every 5 miles until you get somewhere civilised.

Isn't there a wheel well for the spare to sit in for the GT?

My recent experience of punctures is that no amount of foamy stuff will ever bring it back to life, no matter how temporarily!

Theres a well... but just for tools and foamy stuff... never get a wheel in it...

just have to hope that when the inevitable happens my phone is charged - and I've nothing pressing for the rest of the day .... trouble is ... it doesn't happen when its convenient ..

Yep it takes the bottom third of the spare wheel whereas the over generous sized boot has to accommodate the rest.

Ah right - hadn't realised the situation was quite so bad. The QP very nearly takes the spare wheel under the floor. Very nearly.... Obviously there's still the small problem of what to do with the full-sized rim, should one actually use the spare wheel.

...have to chuck it.

This really is ridiculous.
I have an unused front tyre (2007QP) sitting in my garage. Will it fit the rim of the rear wheel should a puncture happen?
If so
I may well plonk it in the boot - there is nothing else in there, but why can't we have a proper spare
Sorry sir no Durex, put some glue on the tear.............

No, the tyres are different - the rear rims are much wider.

You can have a 'proper' spare - either the Mitsubishi GTO version I have from eBay for ~£40, or the offishull Maserati spendy version.

You do realise the compressor is optional. You can get decent cans of self inflate now (and I don't mean tyre weld)

Yes, I wouldn't mind the space issue in the boot as I don't tend to carry much, it's just a case of trying to find out which space saver spare is the right one for the car, my MD doesn't know of course!

The alternatives listed have the correct bolt pattern, but most of them don't have the correct centre bore.

The Mitsubishi GTO / 3000GT have both the correct CB and bolt pattern. Plus they will clear the brakes. I can't justify to myself a £1k bill for a 'proper' spacesaver that I'd hopefully never use, when for buttons I can get an alloy space saver which will do the job perfectly should it be needed.

I can absolutely see your point Drew. Maybe I will start researching a 18" alternative that will be suitable for the 4.7 range

Cheers, Stuart
