Granturismo values

Hi,

Although I'm not exactly a newbie I haven't posted in some years as I sold my 4200 several years ago. With the onset of age I resided myself to more sensible transport e.g Jag xf/xjl, S class and my current 520d. I think you can see where this is going...
With the prices of a granturismo they are little more than my present car. I've set myself a budget of 25k to avoid the cheap neglected ones. I've been using

to value potential purchases to see if they are reasonably good value. I've used them before and inspite of their reputation found them fair.

I've valued my present car and it comes out at 19k, 2k less than I paid for it 6 months ago. However, when I value potential GTs of about 25k they are much the same amount, 19/20k?

Am I missing something...?

I don’t think you can rely on WBAC for an accurate valuation I recently sold my dads BMW 218 with motorway for £3k more than they valued it at.

WBAC belongs to British Car Auctions and I suspect that they don't really want exotic metal as it's difficult for them to move on. They will give you a quote but it's on a 'don't really want it' basis.
Sounds more like it, exotics are always more difficult to value

Welcome back to the fold @Brendan been a good few years. Re WBAC prices: occasionally someone dumps a good car on them, but the vast majority are bad cars requiring huge works, restoration, clutches, brakes etc. WBAC put them into BCA (all part of the same Constellation Group) and make a profit, so they’re really rock bottom. There is a huge difference between a good early MC Shift and a poor one getting dumped into trade. I’d guess around £7-8k at least as that’s what you’d spend on a car that needs clutch, brakes, wheels, tyres and a service. That’s before you’re into paintwork, interior work, subframes, mechanical issues, or other problems like poor history or stacks of owners, crash damage etc. There’s a lot more to it than finding a retail car and tapping the details into WBAC.

And also forgot the variator year cars, again a £4-5k job, hence those fading into obscurity.

WBAC definitely don’t give good prices on anything other than run of the mill cars. When I wanted to sell my Ghibli the price was way off and I got 4k more as a trade in for a car of the same value at a car supermarket. However my daughter wants to sell her 2010 Citroen C1 which has dings all over it and they at first offered £2200 and ended up at £2400. My jaw nearly hit the deck. Obviously a car in demand.

Hi,

Thanks for that. I thought I'd sneeked in without anyone noticing. It's funny how a number of the guys from before are still around.

What you said makes sense. I sold an XJL and S class to them. They only look at the bodywork and the paperwork, nothing else.

Regarding maintenance, I guess the granturismo is higher than a 4200? Also re the variator issue, best to get a 2010 onwards? Though saw a 2009 at Nuvola though.

Yes variator issue, get an engine no. >148697 which is August 2009 build. It will cost more to maintain than a 4200, but nothing daft if you buy a good one.
