GS and 4200 air intake

just looking at warrenty renewal and spoke to Maserati garage for bit of research and main things to go wrong with the GS and 4200 are the engines... I dropped the phone, sat down and relax...had to ask again to make sure I heard right and seems a common issue. by this time I'm thinking about big bills - how much of the misses cloths and shoes can I sell until she notices. I have 2 wardrobes, misses has 5 and 2 of them are triples - whats the ratio for everyone else...OK back to thread....

The guy on the phone then proceeded to explained that if you drive through deep puddles, the air-intake almost being the lowest point of the car will suck the water into the engine and before you know it, the engines had it.

take it this is true, but isn't the air in-take behind the front grill or is it in the low side vents and how deep does the puddle have to be. I'm sure Lambo and Ferrari air in-take are also just as low.

has this happened to anyone ?

if this did happen - wouldn't this be an insurance claim not a warrenty, as these engines are almost the value of the car £20k

Sadly not uncommon Enzo. Think there have been three reported on the forum (IIRC) and it's an engine swap if it happens. Anything long enough and deep enough that the tyres don't displace it needs to be treated with caution.

Hope your listening Frank.......watch out for the puddles on the A55......don't want to have to come and rescue a stranded 4200 !

A possible solution is the induction kit by 4200 Trofeo:Air filter is not as low, BUT the Trofeo has not air condition, so it's easier due to more space.

Who has the money and the patience to make it??

If it's p!ssing down, take a diesel and leave the Maser in the garage. They are not seaworthy.

Know about it Paul....always slow down or try to aquaplane.....;)....simple fix to drill a few 1 inch holes a few inches above opening to reduce "sucking" effect of air intake.....

.....intake down as low as they could get it to ensure maximum sucking effect!!!!!....IHMO...a design fault!

wow... so where are the intake(s) ?

and agree could these not be redirected

This has been covered before a few times

Franks right re the wholes thing , but the water doesn't get sucked in , rather than it scoops it in as the intake on the coupes is on the nearside opening of the front bumper, remember guys it must go past the filter first , the filter box can quickly become full if your doing anykind of serious speed and thats where the problem occurs , by drilling larger 25mm holes in the lower sides of the air intake box you greatly reduce the chance of the box filling up , on the downside the air filter can rust up quicker

No chance of Urby aqualocking then!

I should imagine his full on fan heater would have the reverse effect and blow the water away the speed he goes , or doesn't go , still the only car ive seen without a single nose cone stone chip .....what a boring life he must lead ...................sorry Urbs ..................but you did admit to having gone off cars now that your into biking , lets see if your off the same opinion when you have completed the London to Spain cycle ride

Though there will be no harm in drilling holes ahead of the filter I'd stop short of saying it's a fix, as this isn't proven. The intake sits seven inches from the tarmac, so with only a bit of swell from the tyre directly to it's side, the filter box could be under water in 5 inches with nowhere to drain and I personally would not drive through more than a couple of inches. I'd rather turn around or stop.

Certain Renaults, also have low air intakes, and same happens. And being French, have the ECU, directly where the water runs, if the scuttle drain holes get blocked! Not just French cars either.
Performance cars, need as much air intake as possible. So the intake is positioned in a high pressure area. But the Maser, could be improved upon, without losing pressure/power.

Andy.

this makes sense, installing some sort of air redirect could affect the air intake, that poss why no-one has provide a mod for this. so this is an issue on most supercars
