GS hot starting problem

Hi,
All was fine but now more often than not doesn't start if it is restated upto 30 mins after stopping eg when refuelling.
It starts turning over but stops immediately. Then always restarts on second attempt after being continually turning over for about 10secs.
Also noticed that the cooling fans are possibly running a lot more than normal, but water temp is fine. I "think" this started at the same time.
No warning lights and tried a battery reset Any ideas?
Thanks
Ken

Could be the fuel vapor recovery system not working fully which I understand is linked to the carbon canisters

There is a little thermostat on the bottom of the radiator that is known to perish. This can cause the fans to kick in at an earlier temp than is necessary. It's an easy swap over and from memory costs about £40. Dont know how this would affect hot starting though.

Very rarely I have the same issue. At six years and 44k miles, my car is still on the factory carbon cans so worth a thought.

Could it be the temp sensor causing the rad fans to run and affect how much fuel is used during start up?

Not experienced this on the Maserati but I can concur identical issues and cause in a Fiat: Temp sensor error flooding engine by causing the management system to think the engine was cold during hot restarts.

You might want to take a look at your lambda's K99. It's an easy check on an SD2, and whilst on it, you can see whether any other errors have been saved in relation to the cooling system.

Cheers, Em.

Hi Ken,

As I recall it was a screwed in sensor up on the thermostat housing but there was another on the rad for the fan on that one. Nothing special just a 1600cc fiat lump

The radiator fans are coming on when started from cold, so I think the problem must lie here?

Hi!
First, excuse my English. I have a 2004 coupe and I think the same thing happened to his GS. One day, suddenly, when I started the engine began to run the fan (second gear) and did not stop. I went to refuel, and it was not easy starting, something that never happened. What I did was reset the battery and fixed it all, has not done it again. I hope I have been helpful.

Greetings!
Rafa, from Spain.

I think I read somewhere that sometimes the onboad computer stores an error code if the engine has, in the past, overheated and then this code sticks in the memory so that it thinks the car needs both fans on at the same time even when cold starting.

Therefore, you may want to take the car to a dealer/specialist to have the computer re-set. Failing that, new relays or fan resistor may solve the problem.

For the resistor - see

**should be maserati forum dot co dot uk - but it won't display on the screen

Thanks GranSportFan!
Well I hope it is resolved soon.
In my case, the fan starts when I start the car cold. As I said, reset the battery and everything returned to normal. Now works when the water reaches 90 º C.
Good luck!

Thanks Parisien!
It is a great forum! I will upload photos soon!
My Maserati is a Coupe iManual of 2004, 7 years old, 28000km (~ 17500 miles) and I am the sole owner since I bought it new. I have not had any problems (except that he told K99), and am very happy with it. I care too much!
Happy to enter this forum!

Greetings!
