GT Advice please gents!

Hi all,

I share a similar passion for all things Maserati, in particular, the GT!
I have been eyeing them from a cautious distance for some time now, and reading the forums etc., but I have a few questions I'd really like to illicit a response on:

1. Value - this is a tough one. How do I think about the 4.2 vs the 4.7 MC Shift for example - where does the parity lie? For example, how much value/price should one add for an MC of the same mileage and year as a standard 4.2?

2. Any thoughts around the depreciation/change in value per 1000 or 10,000 miles?

3. What are the "essential" optionals?

4. How easy is it to get a non Maserati warranty for relatively high mileage vehicles? (40 or 50k plus miles)

5. What are the key "buyer beware" points?

6. How much should I be budgeting typically for maintenance on one of these beauties annually, particularly if its higher mileage?

Thanks all, and apologies for the monster post but I really want to get to grips with this, as I think I am getting very close to committing to one of these beauties! Head, heart and all that good stuff! Also want to try, as far as possible, that I get a decent deal against the idea that I believe all parties (myself and the seller) should walk from the deal happy!

Any and all feedback sincerely welcomed. Many thanks

Welcome Mazzaluver, thank you for joining and posting in this the most fabulous and popular Maserati forum on the net.

As ever theres personal preferences, but always at a price, ie budget, spec, mileage, colour combo, buy privately Vs indie dealer vs MD.

There haven't been too many horror stories about the GT but as ever buy the best you can afford, wear and tear items are very expensive on these.

An indie inspection would be ideal, no matter where you're buying it from. Full service history, carefully scrutinised and gone over with fine tooth comb. Try to get a Maserati warranty, after market aint too hot generally!

As ever condition, condition, condition, theres are dogs out there with 20K miles on them, minters with 60K on them!!!

4.7s are a much better car, better brakes too.

Services are much cheaper at indies, check out the web site servicemycar, brakes are very pricey but someone on here has located much cheaper alternatives.

Other members will pass by and offer advice too

Hi and Welcome.

There is little i can offer except get it inspected.. if you tell us where you are you will get many ideas on who to call, they are mostly excellent.

Ive had mine since 2010 and had no problems, i have a GTS MC 4.7 and I would always say try to get a 4.7 if the budget allows, much better in my opinion.

Servicing at a main dealer is 2k every 2 years, mine is 28K miles and clutch is at 38% and brakes have plenty left, good job as brakes are the most expensive serviceable item on the car.

By the best you can afford, if you get a car with the oval exhausts the sound is fantastic, only one car is better in my opinion and thats a members car on here!!!

They are great cars and better than people give them credit for.. oh and you will get lots of comments, especially at garages.

If you want any particular info please ask.

A very warm welcome to the forum......I have driven the 4.7 and 4.2 and the are two very different cars. The 4.7 MC will always be worth the extra over a 4.2 for me. 4.2 is a bit soft and wobbly and not that fast compared to the 4.7.....This is thoughts I came away with after driving both...

Hi Mazzaluver, welcome.

Good choice of car, good choice of forum. I've never driven the 4.2 so can't comment but love my 09 MC Shift. Only issue is it's size (same footprint as a Discovery) so one essential extra is front parking sensors. Comfort seats is another. Bose is probably not needed as a) it isn't very good, and b) the exhaust sounds better.

I bought mine from Nuvola (well worth a look) when it was three years old and it came with a brilliant warranty from Warranty Wise which forked out a couple or three k on ad hoc stuff I could likely have got done for less than half that at an indie rather than a main dealer. Decided not to renew - a very thorough (and free) inspection by my local MD suggested the ~£2k annual fee would be best put aside for a new clutch, due in a year or so.

My last major service was £1,250 inc VAT from a MD, a special price which Nuvola negotiated but which I'm sure is repeatable if you ask. There's a lot of flexibility on service pricing, if you haggle.

Where are you based?

Good luck!

Agree 100% with Adam and Andy...the MC 4.7 is the one to have....with comfort pack...unless you live somewhere hilly. Getting out of a tight parking space would be a nightmare on a hill because of the gearbox.
I sold mine before i moved to Bath and was glad as I don't think it or me would've coped.
Very expensive to run, warranty essential IMO, usual Italian foibles re reliability...but God do I miss it.....the noise and exclusivity can't be beaten.....envious looks everywhere.
Cheers wattie

Whattie...know what you mean with Bath...you need a good handbrake which is missing in most Maserati

I also don't use the handbrake. Oh the laughs we have as Mrs Catman's 147 rolls away, again!

Thanks for all the views so far guys, much appreciated. I am based in Kent and have seen a couple a ADG. also note that Tom Hartley seems to have a few decent low mileage MCs at the moment. Anyone know that outfit?

You all seem to confirm my suspicions in that the 4.7 seems to be the one to go for if possible...time and budget will tell! I am looking to spend about 45k tops for a decent mileage and spec MC. will keep you guys posted.

Thanks again for the thoughts thus far!

Two essential contacts who are filled with knowledge and good advice: Richard Grace of Richard Grace Cars and Nareman Virk of Nuvola London. Well worth a call, the pair of them.

Let me know if you venture north of the estuary. Happy to show you round mine if that helps.

Happy hunting!

Thanks Adam, that's very good of you. And I'll certainly try and give Richard and/or Nareman a call. They don't mind "cold calls" from guys they don't know or have sold cars to?!

Not so far! True enthusiasts, the pair of them. They give used car salesman a good name.
