Pibbow and I agree that the AC with auto in sport mode, is as fast as you like and without effort, gearchanges are faster than manual and the long legs of the 4 speed auto allow a lovely rev range for the exhausts, so long live the auto box and no clutch problems.
Must say when I was looking for an AC I drove both and for me the Manual just suited the nature of the AC better......4 gears didn't feel enough......But this is just me and don't get me wrong the auto was still brilliant....
Nicely gort out of Andy!! Don't get me wrong, I am not knocking the manual at all, but the auto is efforless fast motoring and in sport mode it blasts through the gears with no effort. I once remember hiring one of the early iS200's and the da*ned thing had 6 gears, you were forever changing gear and that was not that fast, the quicker you get through a manual box the quicker you have to change. I had arm ache by the end of a day constantly changing gear.
Well ther's no clutch to change Dem, no thrust bearings etc etc, so they have to be more reliable and less expensive to run. How much is a clutch change these days?
I have to agree, I am used to auto's now and if the wife drives it, it's got to be auto to save me money on petrol and parts, she drives in third everywhere if she can. So auto for me on everything apart from the lawn tractor.
So here's a question...I always thought an Auto used more full....I know the Auto's my wife has had have not been as good on full as the manaul version.....You have less control of the change where as in a manual you control the change......ALways remember a certain hill where we live and everytime I went down in in an auto it was change down a gear where as in a manual you wouldn't.......I'm not sure an older auto is better on fuel to be honest....Modern ones maybe...
On downhill engine braking, an auto is just the same as a manual, you have to knock it down the box, or it will just keep going. In theory, the auto should be as effecient, if not more so on fuel consumption as a manual. Auto always changes at the right time, even when your foot is flat to the floor.
Would dissagree Robert....or would on the autos we have had.......But then they have all been German so not Maserati Auto in there.....Just my experiences.....
So Andy you have found the manuals more fuel efficient? I do suppose it depends on how you drive, what the final drive ratio is and what engine size relative to weight. I would probably agree with you on maybe the smaller engined cars, still not sure on Masers.
Just from the cars my wife have had......She had a man 530 and then had an auto later and the auto was not as good on fuel.........Same with a few 3 series she has had........As I said Rob just my experience....
