Help - My knob has developed a nasty rash

Cleaning the car the other day and I wiped over the gear knob what I thought was quite gently and I seem to have taken the top layer of paint off. The 'cap' on the top of the shifter looks to be a separate part so I contacted the dealers and they quoted £250 +vat to replace it.

WTF!! That's £300 for a small piece of painted plastic not much bigger than my thumb with what is clearly a VERY expensive badge stuck on top.

Does anyone know how it comes off? I'm sure it must be a lot cheaper just to get it repainted. It might seem trivial but the inside of the car suddenly feels the 10 year old beast that it is

Someone is selling a complete gear shift assembly on ebay for £150 (in the wrong colour) and I've half a mind to buy it and pull it apart as a learning exercise.

There's a thread here where someone has had their interior bits wrapped with carbon fibre vinyl. If you look at the gear knob it seems the wrap goes under the badge, so it quite possible pops off.

That was my initial thought but I don't want to just lever it off and break something. It looks like it's probably just clipped in but I wondered if anyone knew for sure?

On BMWs with the ZF 6HP, the plastic bit pops off and to remove the knob you put it in neutral, press the button and pull sharply up. They’ll be some vids on YouTube if you’re not sure what I mean.
