High pitched whine at motorway speed on 4200 Manual

Hi, 2nd "new car teething troubles" post (see key issues post)!

At motorway speeds, I can hear a high pitched whine coming from around the gear lever area. Sounds most like a bearing in the process of failing. The clutch is also near the top of it's travel, which I'm sure means it'll need a new clutch pretty soon (and was budgeted / negotiated in the buying price). Anyone know what this noise might be?

Symptoms sound like gearbox thrust bearing which used to be a common fault on early 90's Land Rover. (Military).

Funnily enough I've got Series 2 landie with just that same problem, can't believe it could really be the same. I'll get it checked when the clutch is checked / replaced.

I would be surprised if it's not. Especially if your gear stick is really loose. You can feel it as you change gear. Slight vibration and tingle through the stick. Series 2, I used to love them, abuse them totally and it's all easy to fix!!!
